Procreate Dreams 4+

New to animation

I’m very very new to animation and so I am aware I will be going through a steep learning curve. I had tied a couple of different apps prior to PD, and this seems easy so far. However, I have watched a number of tutorials, and I notice through googling why certain features aren’t available that there are some device limitations. I have an iPad 7th gen, and when setting up a new project I am limited to HD and 720p. Most annoying so far, is onion skinning being limited to 4 frames. I am wondering what else there will be as I learn more about using the program.

I also really wish the feature on Procreate with lines and shapes snapping into shape was available. As well as the grid, as I have a photography background composition is important to me and I so wish it was there. I got PD as I wanted to focus more on animation but I am wondering if procreate was the way to go.

Overall, I am enjoying the learning process so far. It seems like a very straight forward app. But I echo the sentiments of others saying it seems like there are some flaws and important features missing. Is there any chance that the issues I have mentioned will be fixed in a future update?

Absolutely loving using Procreate Dreams so far! It’s the first animation program I’ve used that felt accessible for someone who’s learning to animate. And for a new app, it is incredibly well made (nothing less than one would expect from the Procreate team, ya’ll are great). There are a few things it would be nice to see, but I absolutely recommend this app, it’s really, really good.

Okay so things that I would love to see (and that may well be coming in later updates idk we’re only like a week in):
- Brush customisation like in Procreate (specifically being able to edit how streamlined a brush is? I’ve been exporting customised brushes from Procreate and then importing them into Dreams as a workaround, so it’s not too bad, but it would be nice to do it all in-app)
- The ability to merge tracks! I’m sure there are work arounds but it would be super useful, especially when it comes to doing line-art
- The ability to alpha-lock a layer! This would be really helpful when it comes to re-colouring something.
- A similar select/magic wand tool to the one in Procreate. As far as I’m aware, the only way to select and manipulate something is to select the whole frame. It’d be really nice to be able to select individual bits of a frame.

Anyway, like I said, this is a really great app, and I’m sure it’s only going to get better with time. Really appreciate all the work that’s clearly gone into making Dreams a reality. Thank you guys 💗🩷💖

Not enough features

Like this app is probably better than most other animation apps though there are some suggestions for the app, I’m unsure if since the app is still in a bit of development though I mean these all in a positive manner. I feel like the app is lacking a bunch or features such as in-app tutorials where it tells you how to use the app cause it took me a while to figure out how to use the app properly. And buttons for things like undo/redo ect. would really help and the rulers and the Lasso tool they would really be helpful. And adding/editing brushes without procreate.
Although this app is really great and is way better than a lot of other animation apps

As for brush editing, we will be adding some basic brush editing functions at a later point in time. However, the complete Brush Studio will remain exclusive to Procreate as it is a feature specifically designed for Procreate as a dedicated illustration application. 22/12/2023 - Hey there - thank you very much for the review of Procreate Dreams. Some of the things you've mentioned, such as app stabilisation and pressure settings, have been built already! Be sure to update, then head to Movie Settings > Preferences > Pressure & Smoothing. Some of the other ideas you brought up are in development or planned for it, too, so we'll definitely keep moving forward with more tools and options.
