Description

Rainforest Plants of Australia – Rockhampton to Victoria, is based on the popular interactive computer key (distributed as a USB) of the same name. The app includes the full identification key to 1140 species, fact sheets for all species and features used in the key, introductory and reference sections and over 8,000 images.

Please note this is a large download (around 400 MB) and depending on your connection, it may take several minutes to download and install the app. An internet connection is not required once installed.

Rainforest Plants of Australia has been developed to identify trees, shrubs and climbing plants that occur naturally or have become naturalized (including exotic weeds) in rainforest from Rockhampton to Victoria. It is a fantastic resource, a thorough and comprehensive source of information for all those concerned about rainforests, their biodiversity, distribution and conservation. The app will be vital for researchers and teachers at universities, TAFEs and schools, environmental consultants and government agencies, community groups and landowners, bushwalkers, gardeners and anyone with an interest in rainforests or rainforest plants. Both plain English and botanical terms (explained in an illustrated glossary) are used throughout the app to make it applicable to as wide an audience as possible.

Despite its Australian focus, this key provides a resource for users in other countries. It shows what type of information is useful and what features can be used in separating rainforest species. It demonstrates how powerful the Lucid Mobile platform is and that such an app can be prepared using this program.

At the core of this app is an interactive identification key powered by Lucid. The key includes 1140 plant species that grow in rainforest of eastern Australia, from Rockhampton to Victoria. To help confirm identification the app provides line drawings, over 8,000 photos and extensive information on each species, including previously unavailable botanical details. A customised image gallery walk-through tutorial assists the user in working the key and accessing the content. The introductory sections include information and images on rainforest and the types of rainforest used in this app. Hints are provided on how to identify rainforest plants as well as an outline of the special features and terms used to separate the many species that on first sight appear to be inseparable!

Due to app size constraints, the 12,000 images in the original USB version of Rainforest Plants of Australia – Rockhampton to Victoria have been reduced to around 8,000 images, retaining the most useful for identifying plants in the rainforest.

Search index by plant photos

I would like to use the index in the ap to learn new plants as well as key out and think if you could update ap to also search and learn new plants using photos not just common and scientific names would be amazing .

Not the easiest to use

I've used plenty of plant id keys and this is not the most intuitive. However once you've used it for a while it becomes easier and easier. And it's the only one I'd trust. Excellent information on species and plenty of photos. I use it in concert with the books. If it's hard to key with the app, it's often much easier with the books and vice versa. However the books don't have all the species info or photos that the app does and it's far more convenient carrying the app around on the phone and I can use it anytime. Best to read all the introductory info thoroughly before using the key, examine the plants really really carefully as some of the plant structures can easily fool you and then start out keying species you already know. Using known species allows u to check how good your observations are by comparing with species descriptions and then concentrate on how to use the key. You need a good 10x lens and to set aside plenty of time to get good at this.

Great info - app needs updating

While it’s great to have all this info in the palm of your hand, it sorely needs an update. There are big bars top and bottom (on an iPhone 11) and most of the buttons don’t do anything. The only button I can actually use is ‘start identification’ which, luckily, is the main reason I bought the app.

I will also point out that in order to use this app to its full potential, you need a good grasp of botanical terms. There is supposed to be a glossary included, but I can’t access it (behind one of the non-functional buttons).
