Their Most August Public Organ

Free · Designed for iPad. Not verified for macOS.

ROOT is a text-mode world you explore one screen at a time — and it grows itself every night. Somewhere in regional Australia, someone built a public archive out of trees: solar-powered memory casings hidden in the burled knots of eucalypts, each broadcasting a small library at three hundred bits per second, to anyone still listening. Then the archive began to change on its own. It did not lose data. It began comparing things. You are @, the Reader — the oldest glyph a terminal has for a person. Wander the mesh node by node. Query what you find and it answers, changed. Download each node's file at 300bps into your /ROOT listing. Follow routes to the edge of the map, where the mesh hasn't grown yet — and come back after the next night to find it has. Everything you see is a character. No sprites, no 3D — just coloured glyphs on a dark screen, in the spirit of the ANSI art and BBS door games of the early net. Every node looks different: paddocks and service stations at dusk, circuit-board interiors, harbours, stormwater drains, a low-poly eucalyptus with a door in it. • A living world. New rooms are dreamt onto the map every night. Open the app tomorrow and it will be larger than it was today, in ways nobody chose. • Memories. Query the right thing and the screen turns warm — a side-on scene from a life surfaces, a beat of narrative, then the mesh returns. • Yours to keep. Plays fully offline. No account, no ads, no tracking, no notifications. Nothing you do leaves your device. ROOT grows out of the novel Their Most August Public Organ by C. W. Smith. You don't need to have read it. The archive is patient. STATUS: BEING READ.

The full archive is now available the instant you begin — the mesh (over 1,000 nodes and growing) loads immediately and plays offline from first launch, instead of filling in over time. Behind the scenes, the app now keeps up with the ever-growing world far more efficiently.
