A fan but unconvinced that the subscription model justifies the continual spend
I have used Ulysses for approximately five years and bought several versions of the app before the change to the subscription model. While there is no debate about Ulysses quality, my doubt has increased in relation to the subscription cost to new feature ratio. For example compare an office 365 annual account. While I like Ulysses, the subscription model increases the onus on providing value. I remain unconvinced. For example, in the latest version 13 the creators flaunt things like highlighting keywords and a target to set writing goals. Sure this is useful, but is it valuable in comparison to say, pinch to zoom. Something that seems pretty low on the evolutionary scale for iOS and macOS but remains absent in the Ulysses feature set across all IOS and MacOS.
I was wondering what everyone was raving about, but you have to use it to understand. It just gets out of your way and allows you to write. No worrying about formatting and it's so versatile. I've written markdown presentations by integrating it with another app, published blog posts from within the app and created pdf and iBook documents. Love it.
Same value for much more money
Ulysses is a very nice app and I’ve loved using for several years. But now technology and apps are changing quickly and Ulysses doesn’t offer enough to justify the subscription fees, unless you’re a high volume professional writer. I’d most like to see support for a Markdown standard (maybe CommonMark), live preview editing with toggle (like Typora) and side-by-side edit-preview options, rendering of LaTeX for scientific typesetting, styling and themes based on web standards and pluggable (anyone can create a theme using CSS and upload it). I think Ulysses is clung too much to PDF and eBook publishing, which limits what it can be as a web publishing writing platform.
