FoldNotes

Some notes are short. Others grow into chapters, plans and running logs you scroll past a hundred times. FoldNotes lets you fold the finished parts away, so a long note stays as small as the part you are actually working on.
Every note is a plain Markdown file. No database, no proprietary format, no export step. Your notes sit in iCloud Drive or on your device, and any other app can open them, today or in ten years.
It is also a real iOS app, written in Swift. Not a web page in a wrapper. It opens instantly, works offline, handles a hardware keyboard properly, and does not sit in the background eating your battery.
FOLD ANYTHING
• Collapse any heading or list item and everything beneath it folds away
• Hoist a section to work on it alone, with everything else out of sight
• Task counts stay on the folded heading, so you can see what is left without unfolding
WRITTEN FOR MARKDOWN
• Live styling as you type — headings, lists, quotes, code, links
• Six heading levels, and GFM tables with a real table editor
• Code blocks with syntax highlighting
• Wiki-links [[like this]], with previews and automatic backlinks
• Nested tags
TASKS WHERE YOU WROTE THEM
• Four states: to do, in progress, done and cancelled
• Due dates and priorities written inline, in plain text
• Assign them to a project and add context and comments
• Counts roll up to the section above them
BUILT FOR IPAD
• Library, notes and editor side by side
• Hardware keyboard shortcuts throughout
• An inspector with outline, tasks, references, properties and a note graph
• Scan printed text straight into a note with the camera
FIND ANYTHING
• Search every note, including regular expressions
• Saved queries and database views across your whole collection
• Daily notes with a calendar
COMING FROM ANOTHER APP
• Import from Bear or Obsidian in a tap
• Or simply point FoldNotes at the Markdown files you already have
MAKE IT YOURS
• Light and dark themes, including Nord, Dracula and Catppuccin
• Choose your body, heading and code fonts
• Paragraph focus, sentence focus and typewriter scrolling
Folding is not a formatting trick. A long document asks you to hold every section in your head at once; folding lets you put the finished ones down. That is the whole idea, and everything else here is built around it.
Your notes will outlive this app, and every app like it. That is rather the point.

Your properties, right at the top of your notes
• A note's properties now sit at its top on iPhone, iPad and iPhone Duo, and you change them where they stand. Tap a value: type text and numbers in place, pick choices from a list with a search box, set a date on a calendar, and tap a checkbox or the stars. Touch and hold a row to take a property off the note. Changes from your other devices show at once.
• Add properties to your notes on iPhone and iPad: tap Add property, or choose Add Property in the / command palette, and pick from your collection's properties. Properties themselves, with their names, types and options, are created and managed on the Mac, in the Property Manager, so every note uses them the same way.
• The Property Manager's rules show as you enter a value. When a required property is empty, a number is outside its range, or text is longer than allowed, an orange dot follows the name and the reason shows beside the value, such as 300 · At most 100. Your value is always kept.
• Show or hide a note's properties from the More menu or the / command palette, or tap Properties to fold them to one line. FoldNotes remembers, note by note, on each device. While they show, the Preview shows them too. Exports leave them out.
• iPhone: as you scroll on through a note, the bar at the top now moves away with your finger. Scrolling back to re-read leaves it away. A quick flick down, or reaching the top, brings it back.
• iPhone Duo: the typing bar has a Commands key, the bolt, for the / command palette, and the word count shrinks to fit instead of being cut off. On the front screen the typing bar is part of the keyboard and runs its full width.
• A tap on a note that was just deleted or moved on another device opens nothing, and a red message over the note says so. A note deleted on another device also leaves your list sooner.
• Fixed: a note deleted for good on another device while you had it open here could be saved back, and return.
• Fixed: saving a note could spoil properties another app had written, such as Obsidian: a list written one item per line lost its items, text over several lines lost its text, and nested properties moved up to the top level.
• Fixed: a note whose own Status property was set to archived was treated as archived.
• Fixed: without iCloud, after FoldNotes was updated it could lose track of your property definitions, saved queries, templates, Database Views and projects.
• Fixed: in a list with a blank line between its tasks, in-progress and cancelled tasks looked wrong in the Preview and exports: in-progress showed a stray bullet, and cancelled looked done.
• Plus a number of fixes.
