iGBA: GBA & GBC Retro Emulator
Game and console emulator
Free · In-App Purchases · Designed for iPad. Not verified for macOS.
iGBA runs your own .gba, .gbc and .gb files on iPhone, iPad and Apple Watch. No account, no cloud, nothing to sign up for: copy a file in and play.
I build iGBA on my own, and most of what is in it came from people writing reviews and telling me what was broken.
SUPPORTED SYSTEMS
- Game Boy
- Game Boy Color
- Game Boy Advance
WHAT YOU GET
- Built for iPhone Duo: it uses the whole unfolded display and keeps playing when you fold it.
- Save states anywhere, alongside the game's own save.
- Rewind when you fall in the pit, and turbo up to 3x for the grinding.
- Cheats: thousands of codes built in, or paste your own. GameShark, Game Genie, Code Breaker and Action Replay formats.
- Link cable between two devices over the network, or between two different games on the same one.
- On-screen buttons you can move, resize, recolor and hide. 8 skins, a color per button, light and dark theme.
- Pick a d-pad, a d-pad with diagonals, or a joystick, and try it before you play.
- MFi and Bluetooth controllers, and a keyboard on iPad.
- Game volume apart from your phone's, so you can put your own music over it.
- Screen filters, frame skip, full screen, and color palettes for monochrome games.
- Apple Watch: your library on your wrist and the Digital Crown as buttons.
- Back up saves, save states, settings and layouts to a single file.
- Play time, favourites, filters and file info in the library.
- Works offline. Your game files stay on your device and are never uploaded.
- 33 languages.
ADS AND PRO
iGBA is free, and the ads are what pay for it, so it can stay free for the people who cannot pay. Pro turns them off for good. If you would rather not pay, watching an ad now and then helps just as much.

YOUR OWN COVERS
• Give every game its box art: touch and hold a game, choose Cover, and pick a picture from Photos or Files.
• Games with a cover get a square card in the grid. Remove it any time to go back to the last screenshot.
• iGBA never downloads covers, so the picture is always yours.
FIXES
• Some fan-translated games restarted right after catching a creature. They now carry on to the next screen.
2.16.0 13 Oct
Most of this update came from your reviews, your emails and the Discord. Thank you for writing them.
LINK CABLE OVER THE INTERNET
• Trade and battle with someone who is not in the same room. Create a room and share its six-letter code, join one with a code, or look for another player with the same game.
• The two games stay in step the same way they do on the local cable. Only button presses travel over the network.
CONTROLLERS
• Every button on your controller can be assigned, including the d-pad, the centre buttons, L3 and R3. A drawing of your controller lights up as you press.
• New actions: fast forward on/off, turbo on/off, rewind, quick save and save states.
• Turbo for A, B, L or R, from 5 to 30 presses a second.
• The pause menu works with the controller, and orientation can be locked from there.
SPEED AND REWIND
• Fast forward at 1.5x and 2.5x, as well as 2x, 3x and 4x.
• Rewind goes back 33 seconds instead of 15.
• The in-game clock now follows the speed: at 2x, tides, berries and day and night move at 2x too.
SAVING
• Each auto-save picks its own interval, from 1 minute to 4 hours, and you can have up to five.
• Set a limit for manual saves; the oldest unprotected one makes room, only after the new one is safely written.
• The in-game save section of the save list can be hidden.
APPLE WATCH
• The d-pad does diagonals and you can slide between directions.
• A button can no longer stay stuck down.
• The Digital Crown can move left and right.
• Sound comes back when the watch screen wakes up.
ALSO
• The classic controller fills the screen in landscape again.
• SELECT and START fit their buttons with every theme, and a theme shows up as soon as you close Settings.
• Resetting the button layout keeps your colours.
• The library shows play time as "2 h 15 min".
• A link cable session between two different games no longer resets both of them.
• Mistranslations fixed in about 25 languages: "Auto", "Saving" and "Trade" had become a car, money saving and commerce.
• Ready for the iPhone Duo.
2.15.0 11 Oct
Most of this update came from your reviews and your emails. Thank you for writing them.
SAVING
• Games that could never save now save. Some cartridges were handed the wrong kind of save memory, so the game wrote where nothing was listening and showed an error every single time, on every device.
• The freeze when a long RPG saves near the end of the story is gone. A 128K cartridge was being run as a 64K one, and the last sectors landed on top of the save itself.
• Settings › Saving has a new panel that reads your save file and tells you in plain words what it found.
• Import saves from another emulator a whole folder at a time, instead of one game at a time.
TRADING BETWEEN SAVE FILES
• What you trade is now recorded in the game's own index, the way trading on a cable does it.
• And it can no longer go missing. The other game was not running, so the next time you opened it an older auto-save put the old team back and wrote over the trade.
CONTROLS
• Fast forward has its own on-screen button. There was a setting for the speed of something you could only start with a Bluetooth controller.
• It runs at 2x, 3x or 4x. The unlock promised 4x and stopped at 3x.
• The d-pad has the same outline as every other button, the same width all the way round, and it takes your colours properly.
• The whole Settings screen opens from the pause menu.
• Colour, size and transparency are in one place instead of two.
APPLE WATCH
• GBA games have sound on the watch. They never had.
• On a 40 mm watch the bottom row no longer runs off the screen, L and R are big enough to hit, and every button shows when it is pressed.
CHEATS
• The second code in a list is saved as a code, not as data belonging to the one above it.
• Game Boy codes already saved on your phone repair themselves.
ALSO
• ROMs no longer show up blank in the Files app.
• On a foldable iPhone, L and R are off the hinge and the picture is clear of the clock.
• "Save states" and "battery save" were mistranslated in 33 languages: save states had become political states, and battery save had become the phone's low-power mode.
• After watching an ad during a game, the screen no longer stays black. The game kept running underneath; you just could not see it.
• The previous copy of the most recent auto-save keeps its picture.
2.14.0 26 Sept
Most of this update came from your reviews. Thank you for writing them.
CHEATS
• Codes the list offered and the emulator quietly threw away now work. Game Genie codes were reaching the core labelled as GameShark, and codes with a blank where a number goes are gone from the list.
• Cheats that were "all over the place" were written for a different revision of the ROM. iGBA now reads your ROM's revision and warns you when the codes were made for another one.
• When a code cannot be applied, it says so instead of showing a checkmark and doing nothing.
CONTROLS
• Buttons land exactly where you put them. The editor, the preview and the game finally agree.
• Color, size, transparency and position, all on one page.
• D-pad, d-pad with diagonals or joystick, each with a tester right below it.
• 8 skins, a color per button, light and dark theme, and the d-pad takes color too.
LINK CABLE
• The link cable between two devices no longer freezes both players on the waiting screen, and it now runs at full speed.
• Trading between two different games on one device no longer writes into the wrong part of the save.
APPLE WATCH
• Your library shows up, and you can play with the iPhone locked.
• The Digital Crown can press A and B.
ALSO
• Back up saves, save states, settings and layouts to a single file.
• Game volume apart from your phone's: turn the game music down, keep the sound effects, play your own.
• GB Palette applies while you are playing, and the palette names no longer lie.
• Pro is no longer lost when you have no signal.
• 33 languages, up from 10.
2.13.0 14 Sept
• Controllers work over USB-C now, not just Bluetooth. A wired pad used to respond only to Start. Every button is found now, and one plugged in before you open iGBA is picked up too.
• The on-screen buttons can no longer disappear. If yours vanished and only reinstalling brought them back, iGBA repairs that by itself the next time it opens.
• Touching the thumbstick no longer cancels the D-pad, and unplugging a controller lets go of the button instead of holding it down.
• A save state that cannot be loaded now says so, instead of reporting success and leaving your game exactly where it was.
• Speeds between 1x and 2x. 1.5x is free.
• Cancel your subscription straight from Settings, whether or not you are subscribed.
• The D-pad now goes where you point. Every corner used to own a third of the pad, so a thumb that drifted turned Up into Up+Left. It now reads the direction you actually pressed, its touch area reaches past the artwork, and diagonals can be switched off for games that only use four directions.
• Change your controls without leaving the game — the pause menu has a Controls row. Open it, try the change, carry on playing.
• Game audio is remembered per game: mute the one whose music grates and the next one keeps its soundtrack.
• The sound no longer cuts out. In busy moments — a long attack animation, a new map loading — the audio could drop for a fraction of a second. That gap is gone.
• Cheats tell you when they will not work, including a cheat file that only matches part of your game's title. That is what French, Italian and Spanish players were being handed.
• Lock the screen to portrait or landscape, in Settings, so the game never rotates while you play.
• Pokemon Self Trade works again on Game Boy. The waiting screen never ended — and on German, French, Italian and Spanish copies the option never even appeared.
• A trade over the link cable is no longer lost when you disconnect. The game had written the trade to its save; iGBA had not.
• The game runs at its real speed again. Frames your phone failed to deliver were never given back, so everything ran about 2% slow with the music stretched to match.
• Cheat codes work out their own format. Action Replay, Pro Action Replay and GameShark hide two different encryptions on Game Boy Advance, and choosing the wrong one used to fail without telling you.
All of this came from players in the Discord server. The link is in Settings.
2.12.0 31 Aug
• Your controls always come back. If every on-screen button ended up hidden, the only way out was reinstalling the app. iGBA now detects it and restores them by itself.
• iGBA now has a community. Join the Discord server from Settings for help, early builds and a say in what comes next.
