Roots AI: Family Tree
Ancestry, crest, photo archive
Only for iPhone
Free · In-App Purchases
Beside every name in the tree, a person appears: their face, their house, the way they took tea on the porch.
A TREE THAT GROWS WITH THE WHOLE FAMILY
Start with yourself and go back to your great-great-grandparents. Invite relatives — each one adds their branch and what only they remember. Living and departed in a single tree.
ALREADY HAVE A TREE? BRING IT WITH YOU
Export a GEDCOM file from Family Tree Builder, RootsMagic, Legacy, Gramps, Ancestry or any other program and import it into Roots. The tree opens on your phone in a minute, and duplicates are recognised automatically. Years of work are not lost, and relatives add to the tree from their own phones.
YOUR FAMILY'S COAT OF ARMS
Create a coat of arms from your surname, your place and your family's history. An emblem you can keep and pass on to your children.
THE STORIES THAT WOULD OTHERWISE DISAPPEAR
The memory keeper asks the questions — you simply answer. Your answers become a coherent story about the person. Not a form, but a conversation.
A FILM ABOUT SOMEONE YOU LOVE
Your photographs, a narrator's voice, music, and titles with their name and years. Download it, send it to family, keep it.
TRANSFORMATIONAL GAMES
«Leela» — the ancient Indian game of self-knowledge: 72 squares, a reading for each one, and a journal of reflections. «Ikigai» — four circles that help you see what you live for.
PLACES OF REMEMBRANCE
Mark a burial site with exact coordinates and build a route to it. The map works offline — cemeteries often have no signal.
TRADITIONS
Commemoration dates for six religions, prayers, and reminders so you never miss an important day.
Russian, Kazakh and English. You decide what the whole family sees and what stays with you alone.
Roots – so that your lineage is not lost to time.

Record a conversation. A new tile on Home: start recording, talk with your mum or grandfather, and we'll suggest the questions. All recordings are kept in one place, in your family tree.
Family events. Anniversary, wedding, birthday – send your relatives a beautiful invitation website: date, place on the map, music. In the calendar, the anniversary now sits next to the wedding.
Roots Premium. A subscription for 3 months or a year: the family book, tree printing and more. If your tree has three or more relatives, the first period is half price.
Also: the dark theme is now graphite, with a dark green tree; new games for the family; Family Copilot remembers past conversations; an introduction to the app for newcomers.
1.2.2 17 Oct
Family Copilot builds your tree for you. Name your parents and grandparents – it puts them in place, then asks about their years and the stories you remember. Each story goes onto that person's page, visible to family only, and from there into the family feed and the book. Copilot replies in the language you write in.
Light theme. In Account → Theme, choose light, dark or match your phone. The tree and the film are light too.
Family feed. Post your own photos with a voice caption, and after a relative's birthday the feed suggests photos from the celebration.
Also: a new app icon; no more signing in again every month; a week before a relative's birthday – a book or film about them as a half-price gift; links from our site rootsfamily.org open the app.
1.2.1 5 Oct
Artifacts store. Your family memory now turns into things you can show and give: bring an old photo to life, build a book about someone close, make a film about your family, send a birthday greeting. Inside is one shared wallet – top it up once and spend it on whatever you need now. Every artifact is made from what your tree already holds.
Share your tree. Your tree now has a link: relatives open it right in a browser, with photos and relationship labels, and can zoom with a pinch. No sign-up needed to look.
The tree in the app. People are shown as cards, just like on the web: a square photo across the full width, a silhouette instead of letters. A person's window is coloured by their branch of the family, and actions are laid out as tiles. Stepfathers, stepmothers and adoptive parents are now visible in the tree.
Family Copilot. It now understands half-brothers, half-sisters, aunts and uncles, no longer mixes up whose profile a story belongs to, offers to ask the relative themselves, and shows which question went to whom.
Also: a new light app icon; on Android we no longer ask for your whole gallery – only the photos you pick; a living table with tea and baursaks in Durak; a character's look by age and gender in Little Life; cleaner GEDCOM import and export.
1.2.0 26 Sept
Getting started is easier: on your first visit, a short tour of the home screen shows where your family tree, Family Copilot, the family calendar and the family feed are.
Family Copilot now lives right on the tree screen – tell it about your relatives without leaving your tree.
New game, Family Home: spend a day together with relatives from your family network.
Also in this version: reactions to chat messages, an easier way to choose who a book or film is about and add a person, saved places can be edited or removed, and fewer crossing lines in the tree.
1.1.9 17 Sept
Family Copilot is an AI helper that builds your family tree through conversation.
Tell it about your relatives in your own words – it works out who is related to whom and puts everyone in place. It knows what to ask next, and if you cannot remember something, it will pass the question to a relative for you.
Nothing enters your tree without your approval: you confirm every person yourself. Made a mistake? One tap undoes it.
We have a new name: the app is now called Roots. Everything you made – your tree, books, coats of arms, photos – is still here.
Also in this version: a calendar of family dates on the home screen, relatives' faces in the tree widget, cleaner generations and spouses in the tree, support opens straight from the tree, plus fixes for Google and Apple sign-in and GEDCOM file import.
1.1.8 12 Sept
Family events are here – a calendar where birthdays and memorial anniversaries arrive from your family tree on their own. Add your own event, give it a photo, invite relatives and discuss the details inside the event, without starting a separate chat.
1.1.7 4 Sept
The app now opens in your phone's language – English and Kazakh from the very first screen. Signing in with Google no longer resets your language. If your phone has no browser, we explain it and offer email sign-in instead.
1.1.6 28 Aug
Family network. The home screen now shows how many relatives you have, along with a network screen and a ring of close family: you can see who is near and how your circle grows.
What's New is now a feed: we tell you what has appeared in the app and why it matters to you.
Portraits. The crop in the circle is saved exactly as you framed it: photos no longer drift or get cut in the wrong place.
Relations. Cousins and second cousins are no longer filed as distant.
Sign-in. If it fails, the app explains why instead of staying silent.
Memorial date reminders arrive on time again.
Also: profiles keep places of life and maiden names, you can add a birthplace when adding a relative, and search opens with the details you started on the website.
1.1.5 27 Aug
The family feed is now a real feed: full-width photos, a heart and replies under every post, and a notification when someone responds. The feed opens from the second button at the bottom.
Hearts and replies also appeared on a person's page – they are shared with the feed.
On a memorial day the candle is now lit by you, and below it you can see which relatives have already come today. The prayer calls the person by name, and the candle appears even when no faith is set.
The app greets your relatives on their birthday and invites you to write to them.
Years of life can be approximate – "around 1890" or "1941–1945" – instead of inventing an exact date.
The family tree picture can now be saved to your phone gallery.
Whoever accepts an invitation owns their page: the portrait and photos on it are theirs to manage.

1.1.4 18 Aug
• A wall for each person. Leave notes on someone's page and add pictures straight from your phone's gallery – your family sees them right away.
• Family coat of arms. The app designs arms for your lineage, and you can enter them into the roll of arms.
• A film about someone you love. Your photographs, a narrator's voice, music, and titles with their name and years.
• The family tree looks cleaner: we reworked how the links between people are drawn.
• A "What's New" feed replaces the search tab – a short note on what has appeared in the app. Searching for burial places stayed on the home screen, in the place of remembrance section.
Improvements and fixes.
1.1.3 9 Aug

• Armorial. The book of families who have taken up their coat of arms.
