At Apple, we’ve always believed in creating products that offer clarity, simplicity, and fairness. That’s why I was deeply disappointed with our experience using Secrets software. Two years ago, we invested in a lifetime license—trusting the promise of lasting value. Yet, with the release of Secrets 4, the company has asked users to pay again to continue using the product. That’s not how you build trust with your customers. After thoughtful reflection and research, the solution became obvious: Apple Passwords. Seamlessly integrated into iPhone and Mac with macOS Sequoia 15.1, it’s a free, first-party app that works beautifully. No subscriptions, no surprises—just a secure, intuitive experience powered by iCloud. At Apple, our goal has always been to create tools that just work, and Apple Passwords embodies that philosophy perfectly.
Thanks for the feedback. Unlike most other software Secrets never went the route of subscriptions. This is still true in Secrets 4 even though there's also that option. Before subscriptions were the norm, software was sold as a one-time purchase with the occasional paid upgrade. At Secrets we still feel this is the right business model for both users and developers. From the original version of Secrets to the last version Secrets 3, 7 years elapsed with continuous updates that were free for all users. And you can continue to use Secrets 3 to this day. Secrets 4 is a completely separate app with a completely different storage and sync mechanics. Also note the word "lifetime" never appeared on our marketing pages or app.Regarding Apple Passwords, it's a good app and I'm happy it fits your needs. You can find a support document on our website on how you can use the CSV export to transition to that app.- Paulo
