TL;DR: amazing note-taking app, was free with ads, now a subscription model if you want more than 3 notes. This is the only time I’ve ever felt compelled to write a review for an app. This app is far and away the best note-taking app I’ve found. I love the amount of freedom it gives you with customising your tools – as someone who perhaps doesn’t take the most traditional notes, this is almost a requirement for me. I’ve tried probably 12+ apps, and nothing else even comes close.However.Their decision to pursue this business model – of keeping the app free for a while, to boost their App Store ranking, only to pivot to a subscription model later – is truly disappointing. This app positions itself as a project born of love – both for and by the community – but it is unfortunately anything but.The current state of note-taking apps is sadly very for-profit. This is especially disappointing when you consider that the vast majority of these apps’ user-bases are comprised of students, who – even if they *can* afford a subscription (certainly not a guarantee) – should definitely not be any more financially burdened than they already are. While I myself am a strong proponent of free and open-source projects, I understand that, for a company and not a hobbyist, a return-on-investment is often necessary to justify a project. My problem is not with the concept of charging users to use their app, but specifically the use of a subscription model.Personally, I would feel comfortable paying a one-time fee for this app, and I’m sure many others would feel the same. The AI features (which I would never touch with a 10 ft pole, but that’s a separate issue) were already sold as an add-on subscription, which I think makes sense, as not every user will need them, and the constant cost of running servers to host that would be unsupported by a one-time payment. To me, the choice to make the entire app fall under a subscription model – particularly after positioning themselves in the way that they did – is one borne entirely out of greed, and for that reason, I cannot possibly recommend it.
We truly appreciate your honest feedback and are glad you love the app’s design and flexibility. Our goal is to provide the best note-taking experience, which is why we’ve moved to a subscription to sustain ongoing development. If you have other questions, please contact us at contact@freenotetech.com!
