Pay to play

I purchased one of the companies lighting products only to discover that that the app which controls the devices requires a weekly/yearly paid subscription to use it. There is an option to use the app without paying, but apparently some of the functionality won’t be available. Fair enough, but selecting this option loops you right back to the apps main screen. There was no indication on the products purchase page that the app needed to control the lights was “pay to play”. I’ve contacted Amazon about obtaining a refund.
