NauticCalc is a professional calculator for precise nautical navigation at sea. Designed for sailors, skippers and maritime crews, it helps you plan safe routes, correct courses and understand changing conditions.
Use NauticCalc to convert between knots, kilometres per hour, metres per second, miles per hour and feet per second. Switch depth units between metres, fathoms and feet, and handle distance in nautical miles, metres and kilometres with confidence.
Plan your voyage with accurate course calculations. Adjust compass headings for deviation and variation, and apply wind and current corrections to keep your vessel on track. Estimate arrival times using distance and speed so you can manage watch schedules and harbour approaches.
Work with wind in Beaufort, kilometres per hour, metres per second and knots. Assess sea conditions, choose suitable sail plans and prepare for regatta or cruising passages. Combine speed, heading and drift to understand the effect of current on your track.
NauticCalc supports everyday coastal sailing as well as longer offshore trips. Use it alongside your paper charts, electronic plotter and logbook to cross check bearings, positions and routes.
Whether you sail a small boat or a large yacht, NauticCalc gives you clear, reliable calculations to support safe and efficient navigation.
more Three calculators that now answer correctly
• Fixed: the Dutchman's Log showed twice the speed. You time an object thrown in at the bow until it passes the stern – but the calculation assumed twice the vessel's length. 10 metres in 5 seconds came out as 7.8 knots instead of 3.9.
• Fixed: the ETA Calculator accepted a speed of 0. It then returned the departure time as the arrival and a duration of zero hours – "already there" with the vessel stopped. The entry is now rejected with a message.
• Fixed: in the Current Triangle a speed of 0 did nothing at all under "Steering Course" and "Determine Current" – no result and no hint as to what was wrong. Under "Course over Ground" the hint did appear, but in German whatever the app language.
1.10.1 Oct 16
A language change now reaches everywhere
• New: in the full-screen route preview every leg carries a wind barb at its midpoint, with the wind speed beside it – direction and knots at a glance, counted as on a weather chart
• Fixed: after a language change the logbook stayed in the old language – the labels only switched once you pulled the list down
• Fixed: automatically created entries kept the language they were born in for ever – description, weather condition and visibility now follow the app language
• Fixed: engine and anchor status, the field names in the voyage report and the manually triggered GPS entry appeared in German whatever the app language
• Fixed: three weather terms named the wrong thing – checked against the meteorological services' own glossaries in German, Dutch and Italian
• Fixed: a correction to a logbook entry showed correctly in the list but stayed wrong in the PDF voyage report
• Fixed: "Mark as manual" only held until the next app start – after that the automatic marker was back and the date field locked again
• Fixed: taking over an existing voyage lost the crew, skipper included
1.10.0 Oct 14
Variation is accurate again
• Fixed: On devices set to a non-Gregorian calendar – the Buddhist calendar in Thailand or the Japanese era calendar, for example – the calculated variation was badly wrong. This affected the variation calculator and voyage planning. With a Gregorian calendar it was always correct.
1.9.1 Oct 12
Voyage planning explains what it recommends
• New: the recommended departure window names the problems it avoids – gusts, reefing pressure, rough seas or arriving after sunset
• New: the voyage explanation describes the voyage, not just the weather – whether the current pushes, slows or sets you across, when the next tidal change is due and, for an arrival in the dark, the times to go with it
• Course correction: the wind is now named as port or starboard, the current and deviation corrections by their sign – "east" and "west" stay with variation, where the chart prescribes them
• The field you are typing in now carries a clear border – previously the blinking cursor was the only clue
• Fixed: rough seas dropped out of the explanation before anyone could read it
• Fixed: times in the explanation were shown in device time instead of local time at the destination
• Fixed: bringing your own OpenWeatherMap key gave "invalid key", when all that was missing was the free "One Call by Call" subscription – the app now says what is really missing and takes you straight there
• Fixed: voyage planning reported missing weather and tide data without ever saying why – it now tells you whether a request quota is used up, a subscription is missing, or the source simply has nothing for that place
• Fixed: in waters with little tide, a tide warning stood there permanently, complete with "Load now" – a button that could never load anything there
• Fixed: a semicolon in the entry type shifted every following column in the voyage CSV
• Fixed: the voyage CSV mixed German and translated column headings
• Fixed: in the wind calculator, a port side picked on the wind rose appeared as "east" in the result and in the logbook entry
• Fixed: the automatic jump to the next field pulled the focus out of the row being typed in – anything typed on landed in a calculated field and vanished
• Fixed: the note under the voyage explanation said "AI-generated" even when the text was assembled from the computed values without AI – the same in the PDF export
• Fixed: in the Anchor Alarm, the status line and the distance line gave two different numbers for the same distance
• Fixed: the wind rose labelled its sectors in German while the rest of the screen was translated
• Fixed: the connection to an NMEA gateway on the boat's Wi-Fi never came up – iOS never asked for local network permission, without which no instrument data gets through
1.9.0 Oct 8
Polar templates and a course correction you can follow
• New: six polar templates from daysailer to cruising catamaran – pick the closest match instead of typing the grid by hand, then fine-tune the values in the editor
• Voyage Briefing: the new "Source" picker shows where the speed comes from – cruising speed, onboard instruments or the polar diagram
• Course correction: the course chain now shows all five courses – compass, magnetic, true, through water and over ground. You see the whole calculation, not just the result
• Course correction: a note appears when the wind or current correction exceeds 45° – usually the drift angle was worked out for a different course
• Fixed: leeway was applied to the wrong side. Wind from starboard lowers the course figure – please re-check any courses you worked out with it
• Angle fields are now labelled "Deg / Min / Sec" instead of small tick marks
• Texts are consistently in English; the last German remnants have been translated
• Fixed: variation and the current triangle rounded the course to 0.1° – that is 6 minutes. 5° 20′ came back as 5° 18′; both are now accurate to the second
• Fixed: with the keyboard open, the tab bar or the plus button at the bottom could cover an input field – a tap on the middle of the field missed it
• The polar diagram and onboard instruments are still being unlocked gradually
1.8.0 Sep 29
Maintenance update
• Polar diagram: the editor shows its title again
• Once you've used NauticCalc on a few different days, it asks for an App Store rating – at most once per version and never while you're entering values. Every rating helps other skippers find the app. Thank you!
1.7.1 Sep 20
Polar diagram – realistic ETA under sail
• New: add your boat's polar (import .pol/.csv, use a preset or enter it by hand) – arrival times then use your actual speed for the wind and angle instead of one flat figure
• No-go warning when the course is too close to the wind, plus a ready beating or gybing plan with tack headings, detour and sailing time – add the turning point to your route with one tap
• Name, archive and reload voyage plans instead of overwriting them with the next one
New in beta – onboard instruments:
• Live values from your boat's network (NMEA 0183, Signal K, NMEA 2000) feed straight into the calculators, logbook and voyage planning: speed through water, course, wind and depth
• Requires a gateway on the onboard Wi-Fi. Rolling out gradually after the update
Also improved:
• Apparent wind now works both ways – including back from measured apparent wind to true wind
• Calculators show their result right after launch instead of waiting for your first entry
• Magnetic variation: a faulty secondary calculator has been removed, and the values are checked against the official NOAA reference
• Course correction: working back with a deviation table now lands exactly on the magnetic heading, and the consistency warning shows up again when heading and corrections don't add up
• Tap the active tab to jump back to its overview
• Voyage planning: route overview map in the result; the AI explanation no longer cuts off on long voyages
• Usage statistics only with your consent – the switch on the start screen is off by default
1.7.0 Aug 26
Your voyage briefing, in plain words
• New: have your voyage briefing explained in natural language – how wind, sea state, current, tide and sun times fit together, in one clear paragraph
• Optional, bring your own key: add your Claude key (Anthropic) for fluent explanations; without a key you get a compact summary – offline and free
• Your calculations stay local and transparent: the AI only phrases them, it doesn't calculate and invents no new recommendations
Also improved:
• Start a voyage plan straight from a logbook voyage – start and destination are carried over
• Anchor alarm now shows "Acquiring position …" while waiting for the first GPS fix
• Polish for coordinate entry on small devices and for the floating tab bar
1.5.0 Aug 12
Voyage planning that works together
• Shared voyage input: set location and time once – tides, current, wind & weather, swell, waves and the briefing all use it and stay in sync
• Sea state as its own signal – with a warning for rough seas
• Hour-by-hour: wind, current and sea state from the hourly forecast, including gusts
• Night-lighting reminder for passages in darkness
• Export your voyage plan as PDF, CSV or JSON – the PDF with a route map (waypoints, harbour names, course, distances)
• Tides with a mini trend and water level for each event – in the app and in exports
Plus refinements and bug fixes.
1.4.0 Jul 13
New: Voyage Briefing – plan your trip at a glance
• Draw your route right on the map: start, stopovers and destination
