How to learn languages on Tandem:
1. Select the language(s) you want to learn in the app
2. Tell us about your language learning goals and your ideal Tandem partner
3. Search for native speakers of your target language in the community
4. Kick-off your language exchange experience by sending your first message

While many features are free, you can choose to subscribe to Tandem Pro to access all the features on the app. Your subscription will automatically renew unless auto-renew is turned off at least 24-hours before the end of the current payment period. Your iTunes account will be automatically charged at the same price for renewal within the 24-hour period prior to the end of the current payment period unless you change your subscription preferences in your Account Settings.

- Location information: Required to use the Nearby feature to see members near you, the Travel feature to show members around the world and to add an approximate location to your profile.
- Microphone: Required for sending audio messages, making audio and video calls, and joining Language Parties.
- Camera: Required for taking photos to upload to your profile or post in a Language Club, take and send a photo in a chat, video calling, and scanning QR codes.
- Notifications: Used to send you notifications about acceptance into the community, new messages, new followers and their posts, new references and marketing communication.
- Nearby devices: Bluetooth access is required to connect audio devices during a call or Language Party.
You can still use Tandem without granting optional permissions, except features where their nature requires the respective permission, like a video call requiring camera permission.

I’m practicing French and helping others with English, it’s pretty cool. That said, the app is structured weirdly similar to a dating app… why would I want to pay to see who’s seen my profile? Kinda weird if you ask me. There isn’t a matching system though, so you can just talk to whoever you see online there. I’m not quite sure the wait in line for invite thing does anything - I got approved within 30 minutes. I suppose they might just be vetting for bots or banned users? I have no idea. I don’t recall ands, which is great! The app has some great integrated features too, like correcting your partner’s sentence or translating it, both directly in the chat with an easy to use UI. There’s a limit for the translation that’s locked behind a paid wall, but tbh it’s understandable as they have to make money somehow. I would’ve preferred if that specific feature was completely free, but I get it. Overall, nice app, just structured weirdly similar to a dating app like Coffee Meets Bagel or something.

Okay, so they require our FB info just like every other unpaid service. Within minutes I was connected yes to 5+ ppl and a week later my inbox is full - I can't keep up! 5 stars once unlimited translations come through.

I used to enjoy this app as a great way to practice languages and chat with natives. Sadly it has been ruined by constant ads when searching for people to talk with.

This app, when I first started using it was fantastic for connecting with people at a time when I lived in Canada and wanted to learn Italian. I even paid for the pro version to translate infinite messages. Now I’ve come back to using this app a year later (but no longer pay for the pro version) and it is completely unusable. Every time I click anything, it immediately serves me an ad. Even if I am just looking at profiles to find a suitable language partner, every click of a profile—advertisement! It’s ridiculous. I spend more time waiting for ads to finish, than actually accomplishing anything.
A better Tandem, just for you! This update brings a more seamless and reliable experience, so you can focus on what really matters—connecting with native speakers and improving your language skills.
