Not worth it if you are Canadian just yet

It is missing a very vast amount of Canadian foods which sometimes have different SKUs depending on the provinces. Otherwise, this is much better than my fitness pal

Kinda disappointed but wait hear me out

I love Jeff nippard I’ve been watching his content for years! I figured it was about time I download his app and give it a shot. Went threw all the hype in the into of the app just to realize I had to pay, don’t get my wrong I want to supposed Jeff and his journey to greatness and id love to pay for his app but I don’t think you can put a price on health, you shouldn’t have to pay to get knowledge of being healthy, you should be willing to provide this service so people don’t have a reason to back out, I know a lot of people who back out of healthy things simply because price holds them back. I feel like if you were to go abouts this it should be like “my fitness pal” a free and paid version, cause at least I can show people new to health that it’s easy to be healthy and that is what makes me happy.

Developer Response ,

There are a few reasons we opted against the freemium model, but the biggest is just that we want to keep our focus on making the app as good as it can be for all users.Freemium necessarily entails an antagonistic relationship with much of your userbase. It's hard to cram enough ads into a nutrition app to not lose money on free users, which forces you to consider things like a) collecting and monetizing (selling) more user data, b) how to cram more ads and/or higher-paying ads (like unskippable video ads instead of classic banner ads or inline image ads) into the app, or c) which features to paywall to induce more users to upgrade to premium.Basically, nutrition apps make most (or all) of their profit from premium users. But, with a freemium model, most of your business calculus has to be focused on squeezing free users, because >90% of your userbase will be free users. If more aggressive ads can take you from losing 15 cents a month on free users to losing 5 cents a month, that's more than worth it, even if it upsets most of your userbase. Or, if paywalling an additional feature will cause a 5% uptick in conversion to premium, it's a great move, even if it upsets most of the userbase. Improving the premium experience should also have a positive ROI by improving retention, but *most* of your focus needs to be on squeezing free users for more ad dollars or higher conversions to premium, both of which entail making a *worse* user experience for most users. The best thing for the business is to create an experience that doesn't piss free users off enough to leave for another app, but that still annoys them enough to effectively incentivize upgrading to premium.

That's just not a game we want to play. With premium-only, the only thing you need to worry about is the quality of the app itself. Better product = higher retention = more profit. Simple and clean. And, it ensures our interests are always aligned with user interests. With freemium, the most profitable business model is to piss most of your users off a little bit, but not too much. With premium-only, the most profitable business model is to make as many people as possible as happy as possible. At the end of the day, that's just how we prefer to orient our business.

I'll also note, we agree wholeheartedly with this: "you shouldn’t have to pay to get knowledge of being healthy." Everyone involved with this app puts out a ton of free content to equip people with the knowledge they need. MacroFactor is a tool and a service that makes it easier and more convenient to put that knowledge into practice. In much the same way, Jeff puts out a lot of great free content about how to design good lifting programs, but he also charges for training programs he sells – those programs are similar tools that make it easier and more convenient to put that knowledge into practice.
