Night settles over a frozen mere, and a single lantern burns at the water's edge. Stillmere is a quiet game of nerve and a keen ear, played in two breaths. First you sound the depths: nine holes flash a growing sequence and the deeper you echo it back, the richer the lie you open below. Then you drop your line, steer it through the drifting shapes, snag the one you want and decide whether to draw it up - a worn line brings things up far less surely and every haul frays it more. Pull up one more or keep what you have before the line gives way. Safe takings now or one more against the cold - that single choice is the whole game.
