The world as you knew it is over. After Inc is the story of what happens next, as you lead efforts to rebuild civilization in the wake of a zombie apocalypse.
Why It’s Popular
There’s no shortage of games set in the midst of an undead invasion, but survival-themed city-builder After Inc. throws up extra challenges that really test your mettle and decision-making.
Supplies are running low in the underground bunkers that saved humanity, forcing the last few survivors of the Necroa Virus to move back to the surface. But the last people on Earth need a strong and adaptable leader (a.k.a. you) if they’re going to thrive in this transformed world.

Water, food, wood, and fuel can no longer be taken for granted, so keeping your resources well stocked requires strategic thinking and forward planning—especially as you can’t fix everything at once. Do you ban washing to save water, but risk spreading the plague? How about eating rotten food to avoid waste, despite the threat of food poisoning? It’s up to you! Don’t forget, too, that the zombie hordes are still out there, and your people will demand that you keep them safe.
Find the right balance and the morale of your citizens will improve, the settlement will grow, and your Authority (essentially your approval rating) will keep you in post. But the locals will be quick to complain if living standards start to fall; once that all-important Authority has disappeared, it’s literally Game Over.
Getting Started
There’s a helpful tutorial to show you the ropes, but you can’t really prepare for what’s coming—and that’s part of what makes After Inc. so much fun.
Sorting one problem tends to lead to another, so the biggest challenge is often knowing what to prioritize next. Luckily, it’s easy to keep track of your supplies and see the grievances of the townsfolk (via dedicated tabs) and, thanks to some clearly defined goals, give your leadership some structure.
If saving the world ever gets a little too straightforward, you can always put yourself and the future of your settlement at the mercy of the game’s Brutal setting, where trust is in short supply and the zombies are particularly ravenous.
Did You Know?
James Vaughan, founder of After Inc. developer Ndemic Creations, made the company’s breakout hit, Plague Inc., as a hobby. It was such a success that he was able to quit his day job and work on the game full-time.
