GAMES WE LOVE

The Completionist: 1980–1989

Run your own magazine back before the digital era took over.

Step back in time in The Completionist: 1980-1989 to run your own pop culture publication during the golden age of magazines. In this strategic idle game, you’ll hire employees to help you through every step of the editorial process as you commission, research, brief, create, and edit stories—all within a few taps, of course.

What we love: The way ’80s nostalgia is built into every component of the game. From the 8-bit text-based design that takes you right back to the age of DOS to the headlines you may have actually read during the decade, such as: “VCRs: The Machine That’s Killing the Movie Theatre” and “Parachute Pants: M.C. Hammer’s Favourite Trouser and Yours.”

You might just forget that you’re on an iPhone or iPad and not an 8-bit computer as you assign tasks to your editorial team, trying to get your first volume into print.

Quick tip: Keep an eye on your available funds at the top of the screen as you spend on new hires, new stories, and boosters from the store. Should you spend a little on late-night pizza to give you a temporary bonus or invest in an editing masterclass or electric typewriter for a permanent increase in skills?

Meet the creator: Faisal Sethi’s Canadian indie studio Frosty Pop is behind a broad range of games that cross all kinds of genres, such as the deceptively simple-looking sports title Big Time Sports, the narrative puzzler The Get Out Kids, and the fast-paced platformer Kings of the Castle. The one thing they all have in common? A deep commitment to a unique design aesthetic.
