Counterpointer is unique in providing music notation tools and exercises in traditional counterpoint, both species and free counterpoint in 2, 3, 4, or more parts. "Species counterpoint" is a teaching method in which you begin with the simplest possible task and proceed step by step until you are writing real counterpoint. Counterpointer not only supplies the tools to write and hear and print your music; it also evaluates your work, marking and commenting on places where you've written something that is not typical of the chosen style. You can keep making changes and pressing "evaluate" until Counterpointer doesn't see anything wrong - generally you'll find the revision actually does sound better! Counterpointer includes a study guide with general advice on writing counterpoint and specific guides for each of the five species. In the Free Counterpoint sections you can write whatever you like and adjust the "rules" as desired. Begin with first species (note-against-note) and work your way up!
更多 Among other minor changes, version 3.066 fixes a bug that was causing Counterpointer to sometimes miss a style error about simultaneously leaping to a perfect consonance in two voices, and also turns that rule on by default in some species exercises that were not using it before. Style "rules" remain customizable in case anyone wants to skip this rule.

Version 3.065 fixes a bug that could affect deleting notes in species exercises.
3.065 2025/02/04
Version 3.064 fixes a bug in the display of interval numbers that appeared in the previous 3.063 update (as seen in the counterpoint lessons of Johann Fux, when it evaluates your work Counterpointer can optionally display the numbers of the intervals your melody forms with the bass line: "5" for a fifth, "10" for a tenth, etc.).
3.064 2025/01/02
Version 3.063 improves various notation elements, particularly when switching from left-right view to a page view of your composition. It also increases the default tempo for various of the exercises (you can still change the tempo as you prefer by clicking on the metronome icon).
3.063 2024/12/18
Version 3.062 brings some minor but useful changes: When listening to playback of a composition the animated beat marker follows more precisely in both page view and left-right ("panorama") view. Symbols like the first/second ending, fermata, etc. are easier to position in either page or panorama view; staying right where you dragged them without needing the nudge tool. And like other symbols, these are functional: a 1st/2nd ending behaves as you would expect when listening to playback (though you can turn that feature off in Score Options if desired). These capabilities aren't needed in exercises but are handy in Free Counterpoint when viewing and hearing some of the many example files available in our online library. The notation tools now all work the same way in our three Macintosh programs: Counterpointer, Practica Musica, and Songworks.
3.062 2024/08/28
Version 3.061 adds to the import feature of the Free Counterpoint activities and makes various improvements in the user experience. Exercises in the Free Counterpoint section can import MusicXML files exported by other notation programs, and with this update Counterpointer is able to import certain files created in a piano staff format by notation programs that treat a pair of piano staves as one XML "part." In Counterpointer each staff is a separate part, and the update correctly converts the import. Version 3.061 is also now multiuser - more than one person can have a personal progress record on the same computer. The new version improves the handling of save-file requests when moving to a new exercise, and there are maintenance changes providing support for Apple's latest operating system.
3.061 2024/05/09
In addition to some internal small fixes, version 3.034 expands and improves the instruction manual, providing more information about the notation options in Counterpointer. It also fixes several of the example files in the Fux exercises - the ones that uses examples taken directly from Fux's Gradus ad Parnassum. Several of those formerly did not display helpful initial bar lines. The other species exercises continue to use a cantus firmus (fixed starting melody) invented on the spot by Counterpointer, and since version 3.032 these random melodies will usually end with a cadence downward to the tonic note as is typical in this style.
3.034 2023/02/24
Counterpointer's "species counterpoint" exercises are divided into those that use starting melodies taken from Fux's "Gradus ad Parnassum," and those that use our melody generator to create a new melody that sounds like a typical "cantus firmus." Version 3.032 revises the melody generator in species exercises so that its melodies will always end with a cadence from the step above the tonic, as is typical of the examples seen in Fux and Jeppeson. It also improves the "info windows" that can pop up to offer additional options for any selected staff symbol.
3.032 2022/10/03
This update changes the default first species rules to allow a leap to a perfect interval in outer voices if the voices involved move in opposing directions (if in the same direction that would still be a "direct" perfect interval and disallowed under a different rule). It also fixes a bug that prevented users from changing that leap rule when customizing a species activity. Other minor changes include hiding the current activity's score display in the start screen until an activity has been launched.
3.031 2022/03/08
Improves compatibility with Mac OS Monterey, once again allowing use of the full range of instrument sounds. Also adds the option to draw ties or slurs as dashed rather than solid lines (ties and slurs now have info windows like other symbols and can be selected with a shift-click).
