Turn an iPad into a realistic smart infusion pump for simulation training. The learner programs the pump the way it is done at the bedside; the instructor runs events from a panel the learner never sees. From the team behind DART Sim and DART SimVent.
WHAT THE LEARNER SEES
• A modular pump: a programming unit with a main display, soft keys and a numeric keypad, plus a pump module and, if you attach one, a syringe module. Portrait or landscape.
• The real workflow. Load the set or the syringe, press CHANNEL SELECT, confirm the syringe size, pick the drug from the Guardrails library, enter patient weight, dose or rate, and VTBI, then START. The pump computes the other value, so the dose-rate arithmetic is checked on screen. Titrate a running infusion the same way.
• Guardrails limits. Soft limits warn and ask for confirmation; hard limits refuse the dose. Dose units in mcg/kg/min, mcg/min, mg/h, units/h and mL/h. A basic mL/h infusion without a drug.
• Alarms that behave like the device. Occlusion on the patient and fluid side, air in line, door open, near end of infusion, infusion complete with KVO, low battery. Priority tones, flashing alarm light, SILENCE for two minutes, RESTART after the cause is fixed. Volume infused, pause, channel off, module release.
• Containers that empty. The bag and the syringe plunger move with the volume delivered, so the learner can see the medication run down.
WHAT THE INSTRUCTOR CONTROLS
• Hidden panel. Inject any alarm on any module, switch to battery, speed the simulation clock to 10x or 60x so a bag runs dry in minutes, attach or detach modules, start a new patient. An event log records every program, override, label mismatch and alarm for the debrief.
• Eight one-tap scenarios. Normal infusion, occlusion during a pressor, air in line, bag runs dry, wrong weight entered, battery failure, door open mid-infusion, syringe near end.
• Scenario editor. Build your own cases as a spreadsheet: the pump state the learner inherits, then timed steps with the module, the event, power and clock speed. Save them on the iPad and step through with previous, stop and next.
