OpenFlow is a Mac app for the hydraulics of open channels, for practising engineers and for students taking the course.
UNIFORM FLOW
Describe a channel and solve Manning's equation for the value you don't have: discharge, water depth, bed slope, Manning's n, base width or pipe diameter. Rectangular, trapezoidal, triangular, parabolic, circular and irregular (surveyed) sections. Results include the flow area, wetted perimeter, hydraulic radius, top width, velocity, Froude number, critical depth and the flow regime, with a rating curve and a drawing of the section.
ENERGY AND THE HYDRAULIC JUMP
Enter a depth and see the alternate depth, the sequent depth across a hydraulic jump, the energy it loses, its kind and its length, beside the specific energy and specific force diagrams.
WATER SURFACE PROFILES
Start from a depth, a sluice gate or a weir, and OpenFlow follows the gradually varied flow profile by the direct step method, names it (M1, S2 and so on) and draws the long section. With a control at each end of a reach, it finds where the hydraulic jump forms.
REPORTS AND EXPORTS
Save a PDF report of the whole analysis, the figure as a PNG, or the rating curve and water surface table as CSV for a spreadsheet.
BUILT TO LEARN FROM
A guide in the app explains each analysis and its terms, with four step-by-step tutorials and the results you should see. Each channel works in SI or US customary units.
OpenFlow is a one-time purchase, with no subscription and no in-app purchases. It collects no data. Results are for study and preliminary design.
