Ratings and Reviews
Better than Duolingo
This app is great for learning languages at your own pace and lets you pick activities and subjects that you need at the time that you would like to take them instead of forcing you to go through what may be unnecessary like Duolingo. I am learning Czech with Mondly and I am so glad it hasn’t had me repeat “hezky ženy” or “hezky strom” over and over again. I’ve actually seen an improvement in my Czech abilities and so have others around me. It’s also great that it has a memory place that allows you to refresh words and phrases you have already learned.
Best App I’ve found
Really good for vocabulary and reinforcing the words. The hands free option is the best as it forces you to learn and speak. Other apps make you think you’ve learned a word or phrase whereas Mondly actually makes you learn it. Definitely recommend, it’s good value for the amount of content.
“Less popular” languages have lot of mistakes
Full of flaws. Really. It seems that some language courses are less well developed. I’m learning Ukrainian from Czech version of the app and there are serious flaws in the lessons. The app is unable to distinguish between nouns and adjectives (eg He is Brazilian vs Brazilian language) which is ok for some languages but definitely not for Slavic ones. The lessons about countries and languages are then almost impossible to finish. Many other translations just sound like a direct mirror of English sentences not even close to the sentences that Czech or Ukrainian speaker would say. It need a serious update and lot of editing from someone who knows the grammar and syntax of Slavic languages and knows the context of the translations which means s/he is not just translating the standalone word database of the app.
