Export Apple Photos Library Into Organized Folders (Even with "Optimize Mac Storage" setting).
======
Photos Takeout is the essential Photos app companion to get true, offline backups of your iCloud and Mac Photos library. Used by thousands of professional photographers and organizers.
Apple Photos’ native File > Export feature saves everything in one big, unorganized folder. Downloading directly from iCloud.com has the same problem, plus, it only exports 1000 items at a time. Photos Takeout exports photos and videos into neat folders organized by Years, Months, Dates or Albums. It’s fast and handles even huge libraries with ease.
** A MUST FOR "OPTIMIZE STORAGE" USERS **
With “Optimize Mac Storage” setting, your full-resolution photos are in iCloud. Time Machine or direct copying can't back them up, since your Mac only has small-sized versions. Photos Takeout exports full-resolution photos and videos from iCloud with a few clicks.
** WHEN ICLOUD / MAC STORAGE IS FULL **
No need to upgrade iCloud or Mac storage. Make a full offline backup with Photos Takeout, then delete large or seldom-used photos and videos from your main library to free up gigabytes in storage. Save $$$.
** PERFECT TOOL FOR 3-2-1 BACKUPS **
iCloud Photos is a syncing service, not a backup. Your cherished family photos aren’t safe until you also maintain their full backup on external storage: Ideally two offline copies (One stored offsite), plus one in iCloud and/or your Mac. Photos Takeout makes implementing a 3-2-1 backup strategy really easy.
** HELPS KEEP BACKUPS UP-TO-DATE **
As your Photos library grows over time, you need to update your backup. With other backup methods you have to export everything all over again. Photos Takeout’s powerful "Incremental Export" feature simply scans your library and adds new and modified items to update your backup. Much faster, and you can do it anytime.
** NO 1000 PHOTOS RESTRICTION **
iCloud.com/Photos only lets you download 1000 items at a time – so exporting a library of 20,000 photos will take 20 exports, merging those 20 folders, and reorganizing. Then repeating the process every time your update your backup. Photos Takeout does it all in one session – no 1000 photos or any file count / file size limitations.
** SAFELY STORE PHOTOS ON NAS **
Apple Photos library must never be stored on NAS or cloud drives. However, once Photos Takeout exports everything into standard folders, you can safely save them anywhere—NAS (Synology, QNAP), external hard drives, USB sticks, or other cloud storage.

Very good app
Der Nahpets
I am glad to see that there is a good working backup app for the photos app. I did it manually in the past and this is a big time effort every time. So this needs also time because of the large data base of course, but It works pretty good with more or less one click. One star is missing, because I am not sure if the check for already existing items is working as it should. It seems that items already exists will be copied again and so or so the check is slow.
Saved WEEKS of frustrating work

My photos library is too large to fit on my local machine and I wanted a back up (iCloud sync is not a backup). I was trying to do this manually, but iCloud is extremely frustrating to rely on because it appears to hang. I have read explanations online that it works on one task at a time, first checking all pictures and only then beginning to transfer data. That means any small change to your library risks literal WEEKS of checking before the files begin to download. Hacks like selecting slideshows to force Photos to load locally are slow and often didn’t work. Come Photos Takeout and within a couple days, everything was done. Somehow it is able to cajole iCloud into downloading data instantly, and the simple architecture of the program makes it very resilient: because it organises pictures into folders for months nested within folders for years, and because it can check what has already been saved before saving, if you have to force quit it or are interrupted, it will pick up seamlessly where it left off. It also creates no downstream dependency on the product, since it’s files in folders, which is super simple and robust. I did have some issues with it sticking on certain files that appear to have been corrupted by iCloud (available on one device but not another). But the customer service is AMAZING and I was able to resolve it. I hope this continues to work because it made backing up my library feasible. Highly recommend!

Thanks for the kind feedback and comparison vs. iCloud Photos's export functionality. Now that you have a full backup you can update it any time with our Incremental Exports feature. If your library is too large for the Mac, you may either move it to an external SSD (See https://support.apple.com/en-us/108345) or replace the largest items in your library with their compact versions (See https://appinitio.medium.com/how-to-save-a-million-photos-in-icloud-for-free-05e1131395e7). Having a leaner library would make it more performant and less prone to corruption or other problems.
Working well

RAWs are not exportet - that's not a Backup.
Peter Henkel
I bought the "Pro" version of the software yesterday to back up all the contents of the Photo Library, but then realized that, for example, RAW files are not exported from the database.Even if I designate RAW as "Original" in Apple Photos, only JPGs are exported. I have not found a way to change or influence this behavior. Apple Photos itself, however, exports RAW images! The exported JPGs are only about a third of the size of the JPGs exported directly from Apple Photos. In Adobe Lightroom you can see a difference between the exports from Apple Photos and PhotosTakeout. In my export tests, it made no difference to the JPG size whether the "Unmodified" option was set in the export options or not.Without really exporting all the content from the database, the software is more or less worthless for me. Quality changes are also unacceptable to me. What a pity!

Photos Takeout exports RAW as well as RAW + JPG pairs according to this rule: If Unmodified is check-marked: The unedited original RAW image is exported. If Unmodified is unchecked: The edited JPG version is exported. Please contact us, indicating which version of MacOS you are using, so that we may assist.
Added 'Select All' option for Years and Albums to simplify bulk selection. Other under-the-hood improvements.
