Boba is different by design. HOW IT WORKS 1. Open the app. 2. Point your camera at food. 3. Get calories and macros in a few seconds. 4. Log it to your day. That's it. No account, no email, no credit card, no paywall. ON-DEVICE AI Boba runs a 2-billion parameter vision-language model, fine-tuned on a custom food dataset. The entire model ships inside the app — bundled at install time, no first-launch download, no cloud calls at inference. Everything happens on your iPhone's Neural Engine. Test set accuracy: 89.8 calorie MAE. The best on-device food AI we could build. PRIVACY BY ARCHITECTURE Boba doesn't collect your data because the app is designed so it can't. There are no Boba servers that receive your photos. There is no user database. There are no analytics. The only outbound request the app ever makes is to Open Food Facts when you scan a barcode — and that query contains only the barcode digits, nothing else. Every self tracking app that uses your data for profiling is dystopian to me. Local VLMs have made a lot of progress and are right in the uncanny valley, but are still ethical from what I can tell. Especially this <2 GB model, trained for food tracking, is perfect for on device use. Looking at an onion, it takes 1 minute to guess macro values and uses ~1gb of memory, which every iPhone should be able to handle. The design is great! Some minor features don’t display correctly; the chat window doesn’t open and I would love a feature to add ingredient tables from a photo for the „manual“ entry option, but overall in Version 1.0 this app is basically feature complete.
