Ready for iOS 27. Ink you recolour, move, resize or turn is drawn where it now is — on iOS 27 it could stay drawn as it had been, and a page left open when the device went dark kept its light ink. A drawing made on iOS 27 opens on iPads and iPhones still on iOS 18 too. A page whose ink this device cannot read is kept exactly as it is. It opens read-only and says why, instead of being saved over. Handwriting is read far more reliably for search. On iOS 27 Indent uses Apple's new handwriting recogniser, and on earlier versions the ink is read on white paper, which the reader needs. Choosing a language in Settings changes Indent at once, with no restart. A spreadsheet with thousands of cells opens in a moment. A 25,000-cell workbook took more than two minutes; it now takes a fraction of a second. Undo while typing in a cell brings back what it undid, and it stays back when you carry on typing. On iPhone, a new page is cut for the phone rather than for an iPad, and a page written on an iPad starts below the top row instead of under the clock. Turning iCloud sync on takes your folders with it, not only the notes at the top. Turning it off copies your notes onto this device and leaves them in iCloud for your other devices. Writing made while a note was still opening is saved, and a file arriving while another note opened can no longer land in the note you were on. Also: the words on a bar read clearly on iOS 27, the news page stays smooth while a large feed loads, and quieter labels are a little darker.

Writing stays on the page. Handwriting drawn over earlier writing could be read as a scribble and rub it out. It cannot any more: a scratch has to travel sideways the way a real crossing-out does, so an 8, an S, a signature and joined-up loops are writing again. You can write the letter T on a to-do page. A crossbar, an underline and a line written across two rules no longer tick an item off. Only a line drawn through the writing does. The iPhone now reaches everything the iPad does. The bar carries each mode's own tools, the eraser, the ink you are holding and the function shelf, with PAGE opening everything else — the tray, the selection actions, the symmetry guide, pins and the rest. Panels open on a phone at all, which they did not before: the page would dim and slide aside for a panel that never arrived. The tray on a phone is the width of the screen with its sections scrolling, rather than the iPad's narrow column squeezed to fit. A sheet on a phone is laid out properly. The frozen column sits with its own figures instead of two rows below them, the letters clear the top row, and the Notes door and the save mark no longer sit on top of the table. Locked notes stay locked. A locked note can no longer be picked for a deck, exported or deleted from the stream without asking first, and Handoff no longer sends its opening line to your other device. A cell filled by TOTALS, SUM, a sort or fill down appears straight away instead of waiting until the note is opened again. A checkbox you drew can be placed whatever tool is in your hand. Also fixed: a note is saved in the folder it belongs to rather than the one you were looking at; the page you are writing on is never replaced when the app restores; ink keeps its colour when the device changes between light and dark; and dragging a selection no longer leaves later strokes unsaved. Opening and saving a note are quicker, and quieter text throughout is easier to read.
