Script Smith
Short-video script studio
Free · Designed for iPad. Not verified for macOS.
Scriptsmith is the pre-production studio for short video. Write your script, see if it actually fits the slot, lock your opener, and plan the shoot — all before you hit record. Everything works offline, with no account, no subscription, and no ads.
THE TIMING ENGINE
Stop guessing. As you type, Scriptsmith estimates how long your script takes to say at your chosen speaking pace — and tells you whether it fits your target length. Over by six seconds? It tells you roughly how many words to trim. A 30-second video is only about 80 words; now you'll know before you film, not after.
WRITE IN BEATS
Structure your video the way the best ones are built: Hook → Context → Value → Payoff → Call to Action. Every line is tagged with its role, so you can see the shape of your video at a glance — and spot the beat that's missing. A live pacing bar shows exactly where your time goes.
83 HOOK FORMULAS
The first three seconds decide everything. Browse a curated library of fill-in-the-blank opening formulas across twelve angles — curiosity, contrarian, listicle, story, and more — each with a worked example and the reason it stops the scroll. Drop any hook straight into a script.
23 PROVEN FORMATS
Never start from a blank page. Pick a structure — How-To, Story Time, Myth vs Fact, Hot Take, Before & After, and more — and your script begins with the beats already laid out, plus pacing guidance and a strong call-to-action idea.
PLAN THE SHOOT
Attach a shot list to any script: A-roll, B-roll, on-screen text, props, locations. Check items off as you film so nothing gets forgotten.
REHEARSE THE PACING
Run through your script beat by beat at your target pace, with a gentle haptic on each beat, so you feel the rhythm before the camera is rolling.
LEARN THE CRAFT
Ten in-depth guides on hooks, structure, writing for the ear, pacing, batching, and repurposing — plus quick-reference frameworks and a 32-term glossary.
PRIVATE BY DESIGN
Scriptsmith runs entirely on your device. Your scripts never leave your phone. No account, no network, no tracking, no in-app purchases — ever.
A one-time purchase. An independent creator tool, not affiliated with, endorsed by, or connected to any social platform or app. Runtime figures are estimates and will vary with your delivery.

What's New in Scriptsmith 1.3
Repeated-word detection - The Clarity Score now flags content words you've used too many times in a short script. In an 80-word video, repeating the same word three or more times sounds monotonous on camera - listeners notice the echo even when you, the writer, don't. Expand the Clarity Score panel to see exactly which words are over-used, how many times they appear, and a one-line fix. The score is adjusted accordingly, and the new "Repeated word" flag appears in the Clarity Report export.
Hook Variants - A new "Hook variants" button appears in the Beat editor whenever your script has a hook beat. Tap it to write up to 3 alternate hook texts alongside the active one - without duplicating the entire script. Each variant stores its own text and an optional label (e.g. "The bold one"). Tapping "Use this" on any variant swaps it into the active hook non-destructively: the current hook text slides into the variant slot so you can always switch back. A badge on the button shows how many variants you've written at a glance.
Pipeline stats card - The Scripts list now shows a compact pipeline summary card when you have two or more scripts: a status breakdown (Idea / Scripted / Filming / Posted) with colored indicators, a progress bar for how many scripts you've posted, and the total estimated filming runtime of all scripted-but-not-yet-filmed scripts - useful when planning a batch shoot.
Two new frameworks - "Vary Your Words" (the threshold rule for content-word repetition in short video) and "Write Three Hooks" (why you should draft multiple openers and pick the best) are added to the Frameworks quick-reference in the Learn tab.
Expanded guide - "Write to Be Said" in the Learn tab now includes a new section on word repetition: what it is, why it matters more on camera than on the page, and three concrete strategies for varying your language.
Two new glossary terms - "Hook variant" and "Word repetition" are added to the glossary in the Learn tab.
