First thing happening was that my Apple ID and corresponding email address was read out and I was requested to insert my Passcode. Eventually arriving at a "record" button. No input gain adjustment. How can this be for musicians? Stopping a recording, the captured data can be assumed to be in some cloud storage. No question about the wished file name or folder and no saving to a self controlled storage without first having agreed on a pricey subscription. There appears provided some feature which I din't find in similar apps: recording directly from the Lock Screen, which indeed is interesting for spontaneous recording. However, for the current subscription fees (summer 2023) I did not make use of the trial period for testing how recording would work in the rehearsal room without internet connection, after it looks as if all recordings are first stored online on the Tape It server space and can only afterwards be exported from there to some local location. Maybe someone can share experience about this. [edited after developer response on my first review].
The app is free with no ads, and an entirely optional monthly premium subscription for the price of a coffee. The lifetime option is priced like that: pay once, have a sub for life. Many apps don’t even offer a lifetime option. With “Sign in with Apple” we never get your password in the process. The entire login procedure is handled by Apple, and they strongly encourage this method. All cloud storage is in the EU under EU privacy laws (as seen in our privacy policy, which we keep super short and readable), and with the premium purchase, you get unlimited space. I’m not aware of another cloud provider that lets you buy unlimited space forever for a one time payment like we do. We decided against folders for the same reason modern photo apps don’t have folder structures underneath: in our system, recordings can live in multiple playlists at the same time, and that’s just not possible with folders. You can easily export your recordings anywhere you like; just select them and tap export. Input gain adjustment is a reasonable feature request for some use cases and we’ll definitely consider it, but for now we focused mostly on songwriters and bringing many quality of life improvements to them.Tape It may not be the app for you, but it’s appreciated by many musicians and songwriters whose workflow it significantly improved. Please consider that we’ve been pouring our hearts and souls - and our finances - into making this app before writing a review like this.Update on updated review: all recordings are always instantly available on the device, regardless of whether they’re already synced or not. Tape It is designed for offline situations such as band practice rooms with bad connection or tour busses in the middle of nowhere. You can test this without any subscription - most features, including recording with the same quality as in Voice Memos, are entirely free. The subscription is optional and only needed for additional features: stereo recording, lossless recording, USB audio interface support and the Lock Screen widget. Mono recording and cloud syncing are free.
