In cataract surgery, when opting to place the intraocular lens in the ciliary sulcus rather than the capsular bag, a reduction in lens power is often necessary. This adjustment is required because, as the optic is shifted more anteriorly toward the cornea, its effective power increases. The degree of this adjustment depends on the base power of the intraocular lens, with a proportional increase in the difference as the lens power rises.
This application offers a scale for calculating values within a standard range of base powers. The calculation assumes that the central corneal power falls within the normal range. \n\nThe resulting numbers are applicable for use with most modern posterior chamber intraocular lenses. The estimated effective lens position for the ciliary sulcus is 4.70 mm, while the assumed effective lens position for the capsular bag is 5.20 mm.
