iPad
Type on an iPad held in both hands and it becomes obvious — the stock keyboard was designed for a desk, not for thumbs. It sits pinned to the bottom of the screen, out of reach of the hands holding the device.
ReachType moves the keyboard to where your thumbs already are. Padding below the keys lifts it into reach, and padding at the sides pulls both halves inward, so the hands holding the iPad rest at a natural height — bracketing its centre of mass instead of hanging below it.
Split layout
One thumb cluster at each edge of the screen. Where each row divides is set per row: drag the highlighted gap and only that row moves. Thumbs land in different places for different hands, and one row being right doesn't help if the others are wrong.
Padding fitted to your hands
Bottom and side padding are stored separately for portrait and landscape, because the reach that feels right differs between the two.
Key arrangements to choose from
From the full iPad key set, through a set with fewer modifiers, to a single key that types , . ? ! and ` by direction — keep as much of the keyboard as you actually need.
Extra keys
Put Esc, Ctrl, arrows, line start/end or shell history keys in a row above the keyboard. Use the coding, terminal and cursor presets as they come, or build your own row and order it yourself.
Decoration
The empty space below the keys can hold a decoration. For now a small cat lives there and moves faster the faster you type; more of them are on the way.
No Full Access
ReachType never asks for Full Access. iOS blocks a keyboard without it from sending anything off the device — what you type is neither stored nor transmitted. The keyboard extension makes no network requests at all, and the app contains no analytics, advertising or tracking SDKs.
Free
Switching between the split and basic layouts, the per-row split points and the Korean/English setting are free.
ReachType Pro (one-time purchase, not a subscription)
Unlocks bottom and side padding, key height and letter-key width, the split key arrangements, the extra key row, and the decoration.
Arrangements and extra keys keep being added to and improved as well.
