NEW - maverick (palette: processors > misc): an effect patched from ingredients of the other processors, three to five blocks with modulators and routings, assembled anew on each placement. new patch (edit view, top bar, left of randomize) assembles another; randomize redraws the values of the current one. - drift (edit view, clock row, after x4): the node's clock wanders about the tempo and stalls at times, so its rhythm plays irregularly at the division chosen. Available on every voice except the sampled instruments. - Custom scale (session settings > scale > custom): a keyboard of the twelve notes, each named; tap a note to add it to the scale or remove it. The scale follows the root note. - AUv3 instrument and effect nodes: a level button (edit view, top bar, left of done) shows or hides the level slider, which sits below the plugin's interface on iPad and above it on iPhone. - visualizer (palette: first section, beside synths and controllers): a node that draws animated visuals from the outlets joined to it; full screen lays them over the canvas, which stays operable beneath. CHANGES - convolve (palette: processors > misc) rebuilt: seven synthesized impulse responses, partitioned convolution, crossfaded on change. - cz, formant (palette: generators): play one octave higher. - bell (palette: generators): plays two octaves higher. - Abstract guided path: draws no percussive or drum families, places every voice as a drone, and sets drift on each so a clock switched on plays irregularly. - Angiogenesis never removes an AUv3 plugin node; it may still move and randomize it. - maverick fades out after the transport stops. - visualizer: preset changes blend without a pause. FIXES - AUv3 plugins: opening a plugin's edit view for the first time no longer causes an audio dropout. - iPhone: the keyboard stays up when a name field is selected in the save and rename dialogs. - Undo after creating a patch restores the previous patch's tempo and key. - Automatic processes (angiogenesis, patch creation, expansion) no longer display refused-connection marks on the canvas. - maverick: the filter block could sustain a square-wave tone with no input; it stays within its stable range. - maverick: new patch starts a new instrument, so the chain heard matches the one shown.

NEW - caligula (palette: synths): eight cross-modulating oscillators in four pairs, a hyper-LFO, dual delay and distortion. Randomize generates a new patch from eight internal recipes, each with its own touch and parameter automation. - Capsules (capsule button, top bar, after the patterns button): draw a closed line around nodes to form a capsule; up to three per canvas. Tapping inside a capsule randomizes the nodes it contains. Hold the capsule button to remove all capsules. - Session settings > capsules: select which transforms a capsule tap applies: position, wiring, gates, generators, processors, LFOs, structures. - Under angiogenesis, nodes inside a capsule stay within it; other nodes pass through. - Keep (processor edit view, top bar, beside the favourite star): exempts the processor from removal during angiogenesis. - Session settings > angiogenesis > type: free, or restrained (nodes move; only stereo position and volume or filter change). - lushpad: gen chords (edit view, below the top bar) generates a new chord progression independently of randomize. CHANGES - breadbutter: feedback and wet signal fade out after the transport stops. - lpf18: resonance capped below self-oscillation, with an added resonant peak at the cutoff. - The flute generator is renamed whistle (palette: generators > sustained). - Session settings: section headings enlarged. - Help: the guide and the guided tour updated, including capsules and rebalance.

Maintenance release. FIXES - iPhone: the done button is pinned to the top right of every edit view and can no longer scroll off-screen, which left the view impossible to close. - iPhone: edit view controls that do not fit the width wrap onto additional rows instead of extending off-screen; text and margins scale to the screen.

NEW - anima (palette: synths): a wavetable, FM and granular synthesizer with an internal multi-source modulation engine. Eight sound categories; mod (top bar, left of randomize) randomizes the modulation. - Three new starting sessions in the nzimas folder (settings > sessions): Illbient 1, abstract 6 and abstract 7. - On the abstract create path, the synths page (palette: synths) offers resurgent, bayarea and anima. SYNTHS - A synth's selected sound category is shown under its node on the canvas, e.g. "poundhard · kick". - poundhard retains its selected sound category; tapping the node randomizes within it. - poundhard: heavily driven and folded kicks among the kick designs. - poundhard, polylog: randomize now updates the slider positions. SIDE CHAIN - poundhard kicks act as side chain sources, like the 808 and 909 kicks. - Deeper ducking: the amount (the box halfway along the connection) sets the depth, up to -36 dB, with release over the beat. AUV3 PLUGINS - MIDI plugins: parameter list (parameters button) and a parameter randomizer that leaves tempo, scale, notes and routing unchanged. - The lfo controller (palette: controllers) can modulate MIDI plugin parameters. - iPhone: plugin interfaces larger than the sheet scroll, using the strips at the right and bottom edges. PALETTE - Acoustic instruments are grouped under one tile (palette: generators > acoustic). - Synth nodes use the synths category colour; holos keeps its own. FIXES - poundhard: a reverb feedback fault that could build into a high-frequency tone and mute the voice.

FIXES - AUv3 MIDI plugins show their interface again: every MIDI plugin's edit view was empty. - A plugin on the canvas loads as soon as the AUv3 unlock is confirmed, instead of staying empty until it is added again. NEW - About (settings, beside purchases): the installed version and build, the edition, the device and the iOS version, for bug reports.

The 2.x series of Vascular is about consolidation: smoother workflows, stability, bug fixes, better generator engines and better DSP performance throughout. NEW polylog (palette: synths) An analog polysynth in the classic eight-voice style. - Two oscillators with sync and cross-modulation, noise, a 2-pole or 4-pole filter, two envelopes, an LFO, unison and its own voice allocation. - Ten kinds of sound on its sheet: pad, strings, brass, lead, sync, bass, pluck, keys, pwm and texture. Its die deals a new design of the kind chosen. - Eight sliders: cutoff, resonance, envelope, attack, decay, release, detune and motion. - Synths (palette, first tile): holos, resurgent, bayarea, poundhard and polylog together in one category. - Twelve starting sessions, in the nzimas folder in settings > sessions: melodic, rhythmic and abstract. - Session folders (settings > sessions): make a folder with the folder button under the list; rename or delete folders and sessions with the pencil and bin beside each. The save dialog takes a name and a folder, and asks before replacing a session of the same name. - Node presets: save and load buttons on every node's sheet, with presets shared by all sessions. - Generators play by themselves: gen rhythm and gen melody beside the loop length on every generator's sheet; the die in the top bar changes the sound only. AUV3 PLUGINS - Instruments play their own part: drone or clock, gen rhythm and gen melody, an octave switch, loop length and clock division in the sheet's top bar. - A randomize die for every plugin instrument and effect. - The plugin lists in the palette have a search field and sort by name or developer, a section per developer. - The lfo controller (palette: controllers) moves a plugin's parameters, up to six LFOs a node. PLAYING - On the clock, pads and strings swell into each step and fade out; gen rhythm gives them a slower clock division. - Height means volume all the way: a node against the top bar is at full volume, and position reaches a hard pan. - Effects arrive 62% wet, so a new processor is heard at once. - Each patch from create picks its own key and scale. - Nothing generative moves pitch: no drift and no glide. - The abstract create path is unclocked, with drifting gates, and sometimes led by a holos. - fugitive (palette: controllers) plays an octave lower. - fx sequencer: clear all, left of done. - On iPhone, sheets scroll when they do not fit. REBUILT - A broad pass over the generators and processors: many rebuilt or retuned so that every control is audible, filters and resonators have more character, and the harshest sounds are tamed. - Bit crush (master effects, hold the mute button): crush and downsample are heard, more toward the top. - recursive and impulse are retired. FIXES - Node positions are kept when a session is saved. - Joining a metabolism controller to a cluster no longer crashes. - A die no longer changes a node's rhythm. - Omega and Blofeld designs are as loud as their presets.

NEW NODES - AUv3 plugins (palette: AUv3 plugins, beside controllers): host your own instruments, effects and MIDI plugins as nodes on the canvas, their settings kept with patterns and sessions. An in-app purchase; Restore Purchases is in settings > purchases. - resurgent (palette: generators > macrosynth): a full synthesizer with two scenes, three oscillators, two filters, envelopes, LFOs and effects. The categories on its sheet steer what its die deals. - bayarea (palette: generators > macrosynth): a West Coast synthesizer, struck or droning. - poundhard (palette: generators > macrosynth): an FM drum voice with kick, snare, hi-hat, clap, tom and metallic, industrial and glitch kinds, and three dice: the sound, its LFOs and gen rhythm. - dodgems (palette: controllers): cars bouncing round a court for each voice; every wall they hit is a note. - metabolism (palette: controllers): a Game of Life for each voice, a playhead sweeping it. - dial (palette: controllers): a shift register for each voice, up to six. A loop of bits turns a step at a time and its newest bits choose the note: locked it repeats, loosened it drifts, at the middle every step is new. Tap a bit to flip it. PLAYING AND EDITING - Solo (mixer button, then hold a node): the node is heard alone with its chain. Hold it again to bring the rest back; a tap still mutes. - A padlock beside every parameter: a locked parameter is left alone by the randomizer and by every LFO. - rnd x-y (top of a node's controls): while it is on, "pos x" and "pos y" boxes beside each parameter choose which parameters the node's place on the canvas moves. The box beside each slider is now labelled "invert". - Edit method (settings > sessions, at the bottom): a tap on a node randomizes it and the edit button opens its controls, or a tap opens its controls and the edit button is not shown. - Rename a session: in settings > sessions, hold its name in the list on the left. - metaseq editor: "clear notes" empties the piano roll in one go. - The lfo button is lit while the node's LFO runs. RANDOMIZER - Create is calmer: melodic patches have up to three voices, mostly acoustic instruments; abstract patches are textural; rhythmic patches are percussion only, all on the clock, with a kit under drumaqueen. - Expand grows mostly effects, in gentler steps from simple to complex. - Dismantle: takes nodes off the edges of the network without silencing anything else. CHANGES - A kick's side chain pumps hard on every hit. - Rhythmic gates come in many more patterns. - Rebalance (top bar) spreads the outputs evenly across the whole stereo field and leaves levels alone; it has a new icon. - drumaqueen plays any generator, macrosynths included. - A controller now plays the 303. - A kick is no longer joined automatically to a node you add. - The palette no longer shows an "anything" tile inside each category. FIXES - Muting a processor silences it instead of letting the sound pass through. - A node that runs away can no longer leave the whole instrument silent. - The lpf18 processor no longer howls on its own at high resonance. - gsm no longer leaves a tone ringing after stop. - Angiogenesis never removes a controller's connections.

NEW - drumaqueen (palette: controllers): a drum pattern controller in four styles (IDM, rhythmic noise, experimental, breakbeat), with odd metres, polymeter, fills and breaks. - Microtonal scales (settings > sessions > microtonal): import a Scala (.scl) file to replace the session's scale. - Chromatic scale, first in the scale list. - Side chain amount: a kick wired into another voice shows a small box halfway along the vessel; tap it to set how deep it ducks. CHANGES - The master compressor (hold the mixer button > compression) is rebuilt: it compresses the whole mix, with a sidechain filter, a kick key, a gain reduction meter and a list of profiles. - 6-op (generators > fm) plays two octaves higher and starts on the clock. - Randomizer > wiring no longer moves controllers' connections. - metaseq and drumaqueen have their own node icons. - With no session loaded, the app starts in A minor.

NEW - spool (palette: processors > glitch): a tape loop that records at the speed it plays. Material overdubbed at one speed plays back at another pitch; slow speeds record at a lower rate and alias; reverse records backwards. Pitch steps in fifths and fourths from a quarter speed to twice, forwards or backwards. Mode sets clear, stop, play or overdub; length sets the first take in beats. - fickle (palette: processors > delays): a tempo delay. Left of centre, the repeats reverse, jump back or shift an octave at random on the beat; right of centre, the repeats rise an octave into a reverb. Chance sets how often, freeze loops the last repeats in time with the beat. - wavetable (palette: generators > basic): seven wavetables of 33 frames each, through a resonant low-pass/high-pass filter with its own LFO up to 65 Hz, a delay and reverb, and drive. Moving the frame scans through the table with short crossfades. - fugitive (palette: holos · controllers > controllers): an arpeggio played as a fugue. Join it to up to six generators or acoustic instruments: the first plays the arpeggio, each one after answers it with its own speed (¼× to 4×), direction, transposition in the session's scale and octave, plus ratchets, short loops, grace notes and echoes. Each voice has a tab; "randomize all" draws a new arpeggio and new voices, held it returns every voice to the arpeggio in unison. - lfo (palette: holos · controllers > controllers): a controller that moves parameters. Join it to up to six generators, processors or holos; each gets a tab with three LFOs (parameter, waveform, depth, rate from 100 s to 40 Hz) and its own randomize. While joined, a node's own LFO stands aside. - Palette search: a field at the top of the palette finds any node by name, description or category, and says where it lives. - Randomize button in every node's sheet, in its top row. On processors, holos and drones it draws new settings; on clocked and sequenced voices a new rhythm, line or harmony. - Randomizer: lfos and motifs. Holding gates, lfos or motifs removes what they dealt. CHANGES - The palette is alphabetical inside each section: categories and the nodes in them. Processor categories are now filters, delays, modulation, glitch, reverb, spectral, resonators, distortion, pitch & shift, convolution and grains. - The lfo button in a node's sheet now has a die: a tap draws a new modulator, a hold removes it. - Clearing anything (LFOs, gates, motifs, the gesture looper, the canvas, an fx lane) shows a short message saying what was cleared. Tapping the canvas while delete, edit or mute is on says which mode is on. Dice glow when rolled. - freeze (processors > spectral) fades out when the transport stops and back in when it starts. - voice (generators > sustained) now sings its note as a clear pitch. - chamber (processors > reverb) is now a small live room with denser, cleaner reflections. - Tutorial: the mute step unmutes the node and leaves mute mode before moving on. FIXES - Crackle on generators carrying the sub-octave layer, heard on squine among others. - Changing the root or scale no longer resets the tempo.

NEW - Rebalance: a new button between the mixer and the patterns button. A tap spreads the audible outputs evenly across the stereo field and, while playing, moves the sources up or down to bring the chains to a similar level. The patterns button now sits beside it. - Metaseq editor: a second tab in the metaseq's sheet shows its melody in a piano roll. The metaseq is in the palette, in the first row, beside holos. Tap to add or remove notes, drag to move them, drag a note's end to change its length. A playhead shows the current position and notes light up as they play. - Angiogenesis pause: hold the angiogenesis button while it runs to pause it and store the result as a pattern. Tap to continue. CHANGES - While angiogenesis runs, the randomizer's transform and expand work without ending it; create is unavailable. Stopping angiogenesis still returns the canvas to where it began. - The memory generator (palette: generators > granular) can no longer be the first sound on the canvas, as it only plays back what other voices make. It now has a paler orange. - The global filter in global steering now includes the 303. FIXES - AUv3: Vascular now follows the host's beat position, so it stays in time with other plugins, including after the host's transport is stopped and restarted. - Acoustic instruments and holos phrases now play in time with the rest of the grid. - AUv3: reopening a host session now restores Vascular with sound. Previously the saved nodes came back silent.

NEW: METASEQ - A node that makes no sound and plays melodies on the generators and acoustic instruments it is connected to. In the palette, beside holos. - Hold it and tap a voice to connect. One metaseq can play several voices. - Eight pitch methods and seven rhythm methods, with density, complexity, range, leap, form, evolve, swing, accent, legato, octave, bars and speed. Always in the session's key and tempo. - Tap it, or use randomize in its sheet, for a new melody with new settings. TEMPO AND RECORDING - Tempo is now in the top bar, beside play. Tap the number to type a whole value from 10 to 300 bpm, or use tap tempo. The default is 110 bpm. - Record counts in four beats with a click that is not recorded. If playback is stopped, it starts with the recording, and stopping playback ends the recording. CHANGES - Randomizer and angiogenesis have separate buttons. The randomizer opens on the transform tab, previously named randomize. - The guided tour is now an interactive tutorial: each step waits until you have done it. - The help button in a node's sheet explains its top-bar controls. - The patterns sheet has its own pattern morph slider. - Distorter is rebuilt as a chain of waveshapers, bitcrushers, slew limiters and filters, with new controls. - AUv3: the host's project saves the state of each Vascular instance. FIXES - Tape feedback no longer builds into sustained full-level noise. - 2-op in drone mode no longer fades to near silence. - A duplicated holos plays its patch.

NEW: SAMPLAYER - Load your own loops (any audio file up to three minutes) and play them in Vascular. - A loop plays as it is until you change it. - Tape-style controls: speed, time-stretch, direction (forward, backward, back and forth), start and length, splice, flip and repeat. - Sync fits the loop to the session's tempo and bars. - Tap the node to randomise everything except sync. - Find it under misc in the palette, beside the live input.

NEW GENERATORS - Lushpad: lush, breathing pads - a held drone, or chord progressions that play like themes, always in your key. - Scanned: a ring of masses on springs, struck or bowed and read as a waveform - a steady note whose tone keeps moving. - Cellular: cellular automata turned into sound, with a different character in every node. RICHER ORGANISMS - Every path now grows organisms that are more intricate and more interesting from the start: real networks, evenly balanced in volume and across the stereo field. - The melodic path is more robust and more musical: acoustic instruments and the new lushpad, never crowded. - On the rhythmic path, drones and pads pump with the kick. - Every tonal node plays in the key of your session, and clocked voices play as proper beats. ALSO NEW - Favourites: long-press any node type in the palette, or tap fav in its controls, and find it under favourites in every session. - A holos can now be wired like any generator. - The guided tour is much easier to read. FIXES - The 6-op no longer falls silent, clocked voices no longer click, and the squine and cluster no longer drift, along with many smaller fixes.

HOLOS - A NEW NODE TYPE, BUILT FOR YOU EVERY TIME Every other node in Vascular is a single module. A holos instance is a whole patch in one node, assembled on the spot from the instrument's own modules - a module that has never existed before, and never the same twice. - Choose it at the top of the palette, and it arrives as one electric blue node with a ring inside it: the patch within the node. - Inside: a sound source (sometimes two, one modulating the other) and up to three processors. - Wired four ways: in a chain, crossed, round a feedback loop, or split and mixed back. - Patched the way a player would patch a semi-modular, not at random: it follows the path you are on (abstract, rhythmic or melodic) and draws only from that path's sounds. - Filters and resonators before delays and spectral moves, a space only ever last, never more than one destructive stage. - Eight knobs chosen from across the pieces inside are brought out to its own sliders - a cutoff from one module, a grain size from another, a feedback amount from the loop - each named for the knob and the module it came from. - Tap it and every value inside is redrawn: the same patch, a new voice. - Place another and you have a new instrument altogether. ALSO NEW - The looper belongs to the pattern: storing a pattern stores the gesture looper's layers, and recalling it brings them back. Record different loops of the same node into different patterns and move between them. - Stop stops everything: the looper, angiogenesis and the fx sequencer all hold, while delays and reverbs ring out. Play carries on from where it stopped. - Patterns are complete snapshots: a recall brings back every node's mute, filter, pitch, send, modulator and clock, and each slot carries the fx sequencer's lanes. - New nodes arrive already voiced, their sliders showing their settings from the first moment. - New processors start half wet, so a voice is heard through what is done to it. - Global steering has a filter for holos. AS A PLUGIN - The host's transport plays and stops Vascular: press play in AUM or your DAW and it plays, press stop and it stops, with delays and reverbs ringing out. Its play button follows the host. - The host's clock sets the tempo. Every clock, gate, sequence and woven phrase runs at the host's tempo and follows it when it changes; the tempo slider is greyed out and shows the host's value. - Vascular keeps the host's tempo but keeps its own sense of time within it: it is not a step sequencer, and it does not lock its phrases to the host's bar lines. FIXED - Randomising a processor no longer produces a crushed, stuttering burst. - Churn, chew and skip no longer click and pop. - A rare crash in the prism processor. - Clearing the canvas now empties the looper.

New in this version • FX sequencer — hold the patterns key. Four lanes of sixteenths, each carrying any processor. Every bar you draw lands its processor on one outlet of the canvas at random, for the length of the bar. Per-lane wet level, per-lane length of 1 to 32 steps for polyrhythms, and each lane either in sync with the tempo or drifting on a clock of its own. Two dice: one deals new processors and keeps your bars, the other redraws steps, lengths and parameters. Saved with the session. • Expand — a new tab on the randomizer. It grows the network in the direction the canvas already leans, at three sizes: simple, medium and complex. It fills empty sources, deepens chains, adds second outlets, grows shared rooms and runs vessels between chains, instead of collapsing everything onto one outlet. One undo step, however much it adds. • A gates throw on the randomizer, dealing every node a fresh rhythm or none. • Outlets are drawn ivory, so the end of a chain can be found among the nodes feeding it. • Four new digital generators: bitbend, glitchtable, chordtable and fmnoise. • Five new broken-media processors, which treat the sound as a damaged recording: chew, skip, crush, mulaw and gsm. • The kick and hat rebuilt as 808 circuits. • Every generator family and processor can now appear in a randomly drawn patch. • Storing a pattern selects it, and recalling one returns you to the canvas. • Fixed: crackle in terrain, a crack on every step of a clocked 2-op, hiss and a stall under the hat, and an expansion forcing a rhythmic patch onto the grid. • The written guide and the guided tour brought up to date throughout, with a page and a tour step for the fx sequencer, and the input node, clock division, output routing and pattern behaviour described for the first time.
