Social media without the negativity!
I have had this app for about a year now, and in the past used it to look at fashion related posts to get inspiration from Chinese fashion influences.
Now that there is a surge of English-speaking users coming to the app due to America's ban on TikTok, it has given me the courage to start posting and interacting with other users.
I have found that the Chinese users are very welcoming and kind, and there is a lot less drama and rudeness on this app compared to western social media. This is very refreshing, as the negativity on apps like Instagram and Twitter has gotten so bad that I've had to delete them.
There is a language barrier as most of the app's users are Chinese, but translation softwares are very advanced now, so you can still communicate even if you don't know any Chinese. It is a good opportunity to learn about Chinese culture, and I think it encourages you to be open minded. Despite there being cultural and linguistic differences between the west and China, we still have a lot in common! Such as our mutual love for cute cat photos, as you will likely see when you use the app 🐈
I am pleased that there is finally a social app where you can talk to likeminded people without having to worry about bad vibes from others! I would recommend people to download this, it is a good alternative social media.

An amazing app with developers so quick in response to needs and looking after their app users. It’s an awesome community of people from around the world. Although I’m there mainly to see the lovely Chinese people and culture. I’ve learnt so many new things on health and living a good life from our Chinese brothers and sisters. It’s a fab vibe without stress and toxicity that other social apps can have. It’s welcoming and warm and is definitely worth having and interacting on. Highly recommend. No language barriers as the awesome developers were quick to develop a translate feature and create an English interface to accommodate all the USA ‘refugees’! It’s just perfect! Thank you to the developers, you were and are absolute stars xxx
Very unfriendly to educational creators
Based on my experience, Xiaohongshu is very unfriendly to educational creators, especially those of us based overseas.
Here’s why: I operate as a sole trader in the UK, which is a common and fully recognized business structure here, especially in the education sector. Unlike in China, we don’t need a company license to offer educational services. However, Xiaohongshu’s policies don’t seem to acknowledge this difference.
Despite being officially certified by the British Council, my account was permanently restricted from posting any content related to studying abroad or student recruitment. After investing significant time and effort into building my presence, my account was blocked without any real solution. What’s more, the platform doesn’t recognize professional credentials like ours and requires UK-based creators to provide specific business certifications and pay fees—a system that simply doesn’t apply to sole traders.
Because of this, I do not recommend Xiaohongshu to any educational professionals, especially sole traders outside China. The platform’s policies are impractical for us and end up wasting our time and energy.
