Editors’ Notes

We love how AllTrails helps you zero in on just what you’re looking for. Filter search results by difficulty level and elevation gain, or find trails with waterfalls or hot springs—or that are dog-friendly. Reviews and photos submitted by the AllTrails community give you a full picture (and often insider details) before you head out.

Good Navigation, Poor search function

The app is fantastic once you eventually find a walk in terms of navigation and tracking etc.. The app search function is poor compared to the actual website. The website is great for typing a location in and then seeing the walks in that area but the app doesn’t seem to follow suit. I’ve tried to copy and paste the title of the walk from the website to the app and it gives random walks in a completely different country rather than 10 miles away from me. The example I give is Grasmere in the Lake District. Doesn’t even appear as a location on the app whereas there is loads on the website. From the website it then says open in app in which it just opens the app on the home page and there is nothing you can do find the walk you want. Not the best when you lay £40 a year

Download the Apple Watch App?

I would like to provide some feedback on why I will not be subscribing beyond the free trial period. The app itself is excellent. I recently hiked a new route, and the app was clear, easy to use, with detailed and accurate maps. However, when I opened the app, I was prompted to download the Apple Watch app. I don’t have an Apple Watch.

AllTrails only provided two options: "Install" and "Not Now." I selected "Not Now," but during my entire 4-hour hike, every time I consulted the map, the invitation to install the Watch app reappeared and had to be dismissed before I could proceed. This became so frustrating that I almost installed the app just to stop the pop-up, though I ultimately chose not to, out of principle.

What were you thinking when you effectively made it compulsory for users to download an app for which most users will have zero need? Just include an option to dismiss the prompt permanently, so you don’t completely ruin what would otherwise have been the perfect user experience.
