Alphabear: Words Across Time 9+

I'm obsessed with this game. I freely admit it! It's a word puzzle game a bit like a cross between Scrabble and an anagram: lettered blocks appear on the screen and you have to make words from them. The kicker is that as you progress you win bears, each of whom has special powers, e.g. add the letters I, N and G to the board, add one to the value of every block in a row etc, and you can "skill up" the bears via a special game mode so that your overall score in each game increases.

It's really simple to play, with nice graphics and sounds, and a terrific difficultly curve that keeps you coming back. One thing I'd like to see more of is high scores in the stats section of the game, e.g. the longest word you've ever player is this, the highest scoring word you've played is this, biggest score in a single game, quickest game, longest game etc.

Anyway, definitely don't miss out; Alphabear 2 is a real treat!

With cute graphics, a wide variety of places, levels and bears to engage with and really fun dialogue in the main storyline, there’s tons to do in this sequel.

If you enjoyed the original Alphabear then this is a no-brainer (actually scratch that, bring your brain, you’ll need it). It’s slicker, more complex and they’ve managed to build on all the mechanics of the first game. You don’t have to rely on finding multiple rare bears to level them up; once you have one you can just train it.

Bears can also have different kinds of abilities. In the first game all attributes were passive; now you can have bears who bring an active ability you can manually trigger in-game.

There is a rich set of challenges which add loads of variety to the game play, and the different ‘bearsonality’ types keep the game fresh by constantly rotating what kinds of bears are admissible for activities. Bears won early on used to become useless almost immediately, but now can prove useful if they have just the right temperament.

The only thing I miss from the original is the multiplayer mode - I used to enjoy challenging friends to see who won. If this could be given the same treatment as the events, it would make this the perfect ursine word game.

This game is great! The graphics are beautiful and the settings are really nice. The gameplay is fun and really unique: after searching around for word games I found this, and its the best I’ve played (well technically I found the first one but you know)!

However if I were to improve this game in any way it would be to make the bear you play as more customisable. The bears you collect are all very colourful and I think it would be cool if your avatar could have that as well - I know there’s skins you can buy but I think just changing the colour of the bear’s fur and eyes would be really fun :3
