Description

Apollo was a powerful and customizable Reddit app for iOS

Apollo was an iOS app for browsing Reddit from 2015 to 2023. In 2023 Reddit announced significant price changes to their API, going from free to potentially costing tens of millions of dollars per year, with 30 days notice before developers would start incurring charges. As a result, Apollo was forced to shut down after the better part of a decade building for an incredible, supportive community. With over 100,000 five star ratings, and many accolades, I was incredibly proud of what Apollo accomplished.

The app now exists in a commemorative/historic state, with a thank you message, the option to unlock a Goodbye Apollo wallpaper pack, and options to export data if you had the app downloaded previously (shake the device), and all previous app icons are now automatically unlocked. You can also use the app as a hub to get updates about other things the developer (Christian Selig) is working on.

Again, thank you so much for all the years of fun, it was the honor of a lifetime building the app for all of you!

Editors’ Notes

Apollo for Reddit is an excellent alternative to the official app, with stacks of useful features and tons of settings you can tweak for an even more personalized Reddit experience. Apollo has clearly been designed by someone who spends a lot of time on Reddit, because the app is full of things that’ll delight power users.

A reddit client that completely redefines the UI

I have been using Apollo ever since it came out. It is essentially the reddit mobile application, but more polished, and packed with frequently requested features. The UI is fantastic, clean, and easy to navigate, with development choices designed around making the application as light and fast as possible. The battery usage is ideal, and the performance rarely disappoints.

You can use the application for free without purchasing the full version, but not having the full version prevents you from submitting posts, and you miss out on features such as gif scrubbing (which has spoilt me in other applications which do not have this feature). The pro version is pretty cheap however, and you’ll easily make back your money spent after a couple of days of usage.

Would recommend to anyone looking for a new mobile client for reddit, and those wanting to move from desktop to mobile. 5/5.

Simply the best!

Far superior to the official Reddit app. I have been using the pro version of Apollo for years and have never looked back. I just upgraded to Ultra last month and was so impressed to find that the developer had come up with even more improvements to the wonderful pro version. The features on this app are so amazing and make the Reddit experience so much smoother and more enjoyable.

It’s so appalling that the developer is being forced out of business by Reddit's greed. I will certainly not be going back to using the clunky, featureless, spam filled piece of junk that is the official Reddit app.

Christian, I wish you well with whatever your next endeavour is. So sorry Apollo has been brought to an end in such a cruel manner. Thank you for everything you have done.
