Take a deep breath. That phrase greets you whenever you open Calm. It’s both a call to action and a defining feature of the app’s approach to meditation: you’re going to get through this, and all you need to start is a moment. In the increasingly crowded field of apps for meditation and mindfulness, Calm stands out for its ease of use and attention to (soothing) detail.

Amazing app

This app is amazing, I suffer from postnatal depression and anxiety and suffer slight insomnia because of my depression and anxiety, but since using this app, I have never felt so relaxed in a long time and I’m certainly sleeping so much better. It’s so fantastic that when I listen to it I start to drift off while my headphones are in. Apps that I’ve tried in the past use relaxing outdoor noises to help you sleep, but they would never help me sleep as the noise just frustrated me. So for me, to listen to the app on full volume with my ear phones in my ears, it really is quite the app. I really enjoy using the breathing technique also, I feel very relaxed breathing in, holding my breath and then exhaling, it feels like fresh air is really filling up my lungs. Also I really find it relaxing when you listen to what the woman says, as she pauses, it’s just unbelievably relaxing how the background noise makes you feel. I use this app every night in bed, as I really think it’s the best place to use it in my opinion. Having two kids, a 2.5 year old and a 10 month old is hard work and so stressful, so to use this app after a hard stressful day it’s just what I need. I have actually just had a thought, when the kids are staying over their grandparents house I might listen to it while having a lovely soak in the bath 🙊 nice glass of wine 🍷 and a nice hot soak plus calm, oh why not! Love it.

I love it

I love this app. The variety of sleep stories are great. Even though they are for sleep, i actually find a lot of them really interesting and don’t want to sleep! I was sceptical at first, but found that if you just lay back and relax, and really listen and pay attention to the story it does actually send you to sleep. You have to be willing to let go of anything that may be bothering you and if you find your mind wandering, bring it back to the story. Even if i put a story on and think, this is never going to work, i still feel awake etc. I then must just go flat out, because i then wake up at some point and the story is over! My favourite readers are Joanna Lumley, and Anna Acton. They really relax me and send me to sleep. Please get Joanna Lumley to read lots more! Elephants of Nepal works a charm. The music and sounds on the app are really good too. I’ve used the meditation a few times as i suffer from anxiety, but don’t really find the time to use it to its fullest. It’s well worth subscribing for a year, otherwise you’re spending a lot of money on the monthly subscription. I use the app pretty much every night so it’s worth the money for me.
