Terrible Update!

Really enjoyed playing solo on the previous version but now you are forced to play against silly caricatures!? Really don’t like it and wish I had never updated! Much preferred the simpler style of the old version.

I hastily wrote the original review above and with in a few days received a reply from the developer explaining that the original solo gameplay was still available and how to access it. I am super impressed that the time was taken to reply to me and point out my stupidity! Thank you for your prompt help. It is very rare when a developer considers the possibility that some users will not like an update and offer an opportunity to revert back to the original version and so I have changed my rating accordingly to reflect the excellent support received!

Hello! Sorry for the difficulties. You can still play against the original engine at any difficulty level! If you're already in a game against a Bot, tap on New Game to view the Bot player list. Scrolling to the bottom you can find the original Engine. Tap on it, and then you can choose the playing level, from 400-3200 (Level 1-Level 25). Click "Choose" and on the screen that follows you can decide which color to play as well as if hints and takebacks are allowed.

An honest feedback from 2 years experience

Hello engineering team, I have been using the app for 2 years (nickname igorthebest17) and this has definitely been a wild ride. The app looks solid and smooth from the first glance, with the nice design system, however as a chess player I tend to care more about how the gameplay is implemented, app’s performance and how it handles different network broadbands. No matter the chess board style, it feels sluggish compared to lichess app. Maybe it’s because of the animation time, rerendering, etc. But it’s not a major thing. More importantly, there are some critical bugs still in place. The biggest issue I had - and was also confirmed by my friend - when you switch from WiFi to mobile internet or other way around - the app says that the connection is lost, and there’s no easy way to get back online. When you force restart the app, it just doesn’t start but rather is stuck and you have to repeat the launch many times until eventually it comes back. I lost countless number of games because of that. Other thing I really don’t like about chess com app is that you can’t use analyze board on app. It’s so easy to do it on lichess but you can’t do it here. I often want to analyze OTB games right after I finished them and I can’t do it on my phone. I don’t feel it’s fair as I pay for the premium subscription with unlimited analysis. Please fix it.

Developer Response ,

Thank you for this feedback. We're working on optimizations for super blitz and bullet chess to minimize piece animation and the time used to make moves. Switching networks may show a temporary lack of connection in app but should regain connection soon after. If the app becomes stuck, you can use the "Force stop" option in application settings, but if the problem is occurring frequently, please write to us at support@chess.com for assistance. Lastly, we're working on implementing a standalone analysis board to mirror that feature on the Chess.com website!

If I could give 0 Stars would

App has a lot of features to take advantage of, but most of this requires a paid subscription. This means if you want to just try the game and learn at the same time without committing to paying to play, then this app isn’t for you. You are limited to a lesson per week, which isn’t sufficient since most lessons are somewhat fundamental concepts só in two weeks I learnt little. This essentially means the advantage this app has in terms of lessons and such isn’t actually existent for free to play players, you may as well pay for a tutor. Additionally, the game starts you off at 1200 points, and if you’re a very new player you can expect to spend the first months of your game experience just getting beat and losing trophies until eventually you’re at 0 points where you should have been started. This is probably a marketing tactic to make you pay for lessons on the app since you’re losing so much. Kinda rigged and ended up hating the game of chess because of an app I downloaded to help me learn the game I was so intrigued in. Bad game of choice. Lastly, the customer support doesn’t seem to exist as they haven’t replied to any of my numerous suggestions, complaints or bugs.
