Classic Words (solo word game‪)‬ 4+

Love this version of Scrabble. Been playing it since the paid for Hasbro version was withdrawn (boy - that was blow at the time!). I tried several ‘free’ versions first but all had really annoying advert interruptions after every move😡. This version is perfect for me as I’m not that comfortable challenging complete strangers - I prefer playing against the computer / app. Now, I’m no Scrabble master, but would consider myself to be quite good, and on the highest difficulty level I win more often than not, so for those budding Scrabble champions out there this version may fail to challenge, but for my level it’s just perfect. Unlike the old Hasbro version, Classic Words randomises who starts off the game - a very nice touch indeed. The dictionary function is great at too. Adverts? Well yes there are, but very subtle, and only right at the end of each game and not each move - and might just add, often of some interest to me. But if for you the advert is of no interest, you can simply hit the ‘x’ button and move right on.

Gives a decent solo game with no silly distractions or annoyances. Even on its highest level “Extremely Hard”, it only beats me 1 time in 5 and I am only a decent player not a tournament contender, so the very best Scrabble players won’t find a challenge but most of us mortals will enjoy.

Seems to stick to the rules and distribute letters fairly. I’m pretty sure the few reviewers who accuse it of cheating are just sore they keep losing! And those who say it allows words they don’t like should take that up with the Scrabble authorities because this app by default uses SOWPODS, the official dictionary (which does have some odd inclusions and omissions but that’s just Scrabble).

Ads always there but easy to ignore.

Excellent. No nonsense, no bells, whistles, fairies, treasure chests etc, just straightforward Scrabble against the machine. Several levels of difficulty to give a satisfactory game to players of different abilities. (Edit after about a week: I now find myself playing on the highest “Extremely Hard” level and I’ve won more than I’ve lost. I like to think I’m a pretty good average player so perhaps competition-level players might find it too easy to beat.)

The only ads are brief and appear after the game, which is perfectly acceptable, rather than for a minute or more after every blessed turn, which a certain other app inflicts on players.

Suggestions for improvements:

- Allow me to use my name (rather than ‘Player’).

- Highlight the computer’s last move (have it flash for a few moments or something), rather than having to hunt around the board for it every time.

- Have the computer pause for, say, 5 seconds before making its move, because playing instantaneously makes it appear to find it too easy!
