BETTER THAN I REMEMBER
I'd given up on Compressor years ago, when recently a friend waxed lyrically about it. Could this be the same software I once struggled to use? The same software that seemed to require a PHD in Physics to operate? Well, what do you know? It's the same name, same developer, but a whole different user experience! Blimey, it's even now easy to use! And the results I've achieved are better than any other render /export software I've used, in partnersahip with FCPX. Superb!
Brilliant, when it works
I’d forgotten about compressor after spending many years on PC using avid, but now I’m running avid on my own new m4 max Mac compressor is coming in very handy. Extremely fast transcoding and the droplet system is great, but sometimes things just plain don’t work. Dragging multiple files on a droplet sometimes misses some of the files (when they appear fine within the app), the droplet confirmation window opens behind my other windows and is lacking some basic interface features (like a cancel, which would feel nicer than just closing the window), doesn’t tell you the number of files in the batch (the lack of which is compounded by the fact the app can miss files with no warning) and the window isn’t resizable. I was also hoping to be able to strip the audio from video files but that just plain crashes the app without warning. There are a few other niggles but for small batch fast transcoding it’s still just about ok
good tool but often painfully slow
While in theory compressor has all the tools you would expect, in recent version it suddenly became extremely slow to complete jobs. This isn't a hardware issue - I'm on a powerful mac pro editing and grading 4k footage with Davinci; something is wrong with Compressor itself. It can go through a job at an expected pace, then suddenly slow down to an absolute crawl towards the last 10%. Time estimation it gives is pretty much meaningless and sometimes it adds an error and cancels the job on the last few percent after 6 hours of painful encoding of something that would take a fraction of the time for Davinci or even Premiere Pro.
Seems to need performance improvements / bug cleanup badly.
