Editors’ Notes

You don’t need lots of time or pro skills to make the most of this ultra-fast, super-intuitive photo editor. Darkroom can access your whole photo library at once, letting you immediately start cropping, adjusting curves and using preset filters or creating your own—until your pics are exactly how you want them.

Lightroom Replacement?

As a long time Adobe Lightroom User, I finally got fed up with their extortionate subscription plan and the need to have their fingers in all of my data!

So, having looked around, I. found Darkroom. It's not quite as polished as Lightroom, though I am starting to get the hang of it. I wish I could import pictures straight from my memory card in to a Darkroom Library as with Lightroom, but sadly cannot find any way to do this - the import functions seeming to not work how I expect them to.

But here is the thing: I was able to pay for a one off purchase. I do not need to be hooked up to the internet so my purchase can be verified before the app opens. It allows me to view my images in a similar 'larger than thumbnail' version like Lightroom. I can make some changes without needing to click through to Serif Affinity (my Photoshop replcement). The only thign I miss is the ability to apply 'custom crops' to my images. Whilst the app comes with a good selection of crop styles, I'm more of a custom crop person, so wish I could do that. Every attempt to crop seems to have to work in response to some form of aspect ratio.

But that is my only real gripe for now. It is doing the job I want it to do and that's the main thing. Adobes loss!

Developer Response ,

Hello Andrew, thank you so much for switching to Darkroom! You can import directly from your memory card into Darkroom in a couple of ways. To import from the import dialog you need to browse into the card, down a few directories until you get to where the image files are stored - it's usually under DCIM and then one more folder named something similar to 100MSDCF. Or if you have a Finder window open you can drag the files from the memory card into the Darkroom grid directly. We don't have a feature right now where you can just select the memory card as an option, but let us know if this is what you meant.

You can also use a custom crop, but we call it a "Free" aspect, if you select that as your aspect you can then drag the crop edges to create your custom crop.

Thanks again and if you have any other questions or clarification on these features send us an email at, we're happy to help!

The only editor I use

This is the only photo editor I use, nothing else comes even close. The best feature for me is when I save an edit, I can replace the original or a copy saving me from duplicates. The ability to copy and paste edits across photos is another brilliant feature. Export options is another level not seen in other apps with the ability to add frames and saved custom hashtags. 11/10
I’d love it even more if search and filter view options were improved! The ability to filter via
aspect ratio, unedited photos or basically a full library organiser would mean I can ditch Apple Photos completely!
