Description

Dawn Chorus is a project that combines conservation, science and art to bring people and nature together in creative ways. Its motto is: Stop and Listen. People around the world take time in the morning to listen to the bird chorus wherever they are, record it and upload it to a global database. This data is made available to art and science, which can gain insights into preserving biodiversity.

With the Dawn Chorus app, users can easily and quickly make their recordings. They can also learn more about bird songs and unleash their creativity - for example with the media art feature "Sonic Feather", which transforms their own sound recording into art.
The app's data is only used anonymously and only for scientific and artistic purposes. The app also works offline, the data is then saved locally on the smartphone and can be uploaded later.

Dawn Chorus was launched in 2020 as a citizen science and arts project by BIOTOPIA – Naturkundemuseum Bayern (Munich) and the Stiftung Kunst und Natur (Nantesbuch) in collaboration with the Max Planck Society. Since 2022, LBV (Landesbund für Vogel- und Naturschutz in Bayern/ Bavarian Association for the Protection of Birds and Nature) is the project partner, replacing Stiftung Kunst und Natur.

What’s New

Version 1.3.0

Dawn Chorus is a Citizen Science And Art Project with an app via which people from all over the world can submit Dawn Chorus recordings.
The new version of Dawn Chorus has automatic bird voice recognition via BirdNET.
The results can be added to the record as well as your own choices.
There is an improved account management that personalizes your default settings. For advanced users that use external audio equipment this information can be saved into the account now.
Included in the app is fresh educational material on the science behind Dawn Chorus and on the new AI features.
In the global soundmap users can listen to all sound recordings from all over the world. There are new filter options included: you can now search exclusively for Dawn Chorus recordings or high quality recordings taken with external audio equipment.
The countdown timer is now 10 seconds instead of 5 in order to give more time to move away from the telephone after laying it on a safe place to record.

The user is now enabled to delete recordings before and after submitting them.
In general the user experience has been enhanced by minimizing the necessary confirmations and improved design.
