What can the app do?
• This application provides 100% offline functionality.
• Optimised multitasking on the iPad: Slide Over lets you use a second app without ever leaving the first app. Use Split View to open and use two apps simultaneously, allowing you to, for example, look something up in the dictionary while reading your emails or writing messages.
• 3D touch support: tap a keyword lightly on the iPhone and see a preview of the dictionary entry with Peek. Tap on the icon for the PONS dictionary app to open the menu with the main dictionary functions (Quick Actions) and navigate directly to the chosen function within the dictionary.
• For the visually impaired and the blind! Activate the VoiceOver screen reader function to have the selected function keys and dictionary entry elements read out aloud.
• Direct look-up: Simply select a text in Safari, tap the share button and choose a dictionary. All of the words in the text that can be looked-up are then displayed.
• Look-ups from other applications: Copy individual words or whole sentences to the Clipboard, switch back to the dictionary app and individually look up all the words.
• Learn vocabulary: You can define words that you would like to learn as a vocabulary card. This allows vocabulary to be learned quickly and effectively.
• Have fun learning basic vocabulary: five learning games are available – Memory, Word Combination, Word Snake, Alphabet Soup and Professional test – so that you can have fun while mastering the basic vocabulary.
• Listen to numerous keywords spoken by native speakers and practise your pronunciation.
• Use the full-text search to find examples.

Slower now!
Since last update getting in is slower. Title page has to load first missing the point of a dictionary app. Pity as it was the best.

Entry mistake though
This is a good dictionary which I use all the time. I found a mistake though in the grammar entry under “typische Fehler „ for “rise”. Pluperfect is listed as “rise” instead of “risen”. I contacted the developers but no joy. Really need to speak directly to the publisher.

Good content but needs better interface design
This is an advanced learner's dictionary, accordingly the content itself i.e. the word coverage, is comprehensive.
It has word games to which the user can add words. The app has flash cards that help learning. The dictionary also has a grammar section that's handy. There are four jumps of browsing (previous/next word looked up, previous/next word in dictionary order, previous menu, back to clipboard) for which the screen options are well laid-out and intuitive.
However, it's not without (soft) flaws:
- it has a clipboard lookup function that could have been better designed. PONS failed to understand that if a user wants to see meaning of many words of a paragraph at a time, he/she probably does not want to jump from word to word all the time. A bit more thought on that functionality would help. Having said that, the thought of adding a clipboard lookup itself is commendable!
- in a world where there's "family sharing" and one uses multiple Apple devices, it's truly bad that there's no ability of viewing the favourites and word lists by logging into the app. I have two Apple devices but sadly I can use the word lists only on one or have to manually create the list across devices.
However, in general this is a well made app (what's there works!) based on a strong dictionary. I look forward to even better versions of this app. Recommended provided there are improved versions in the making.
