Editors’ Notes

Duolingo is one of the most successful language-learning apps in the world. Now with Duolingo ABC, kids ages 3 to 6 can get in on the fun with English reading activities. Packed with games and engaging exercises, Duolingo ABC applies the same tried and true methods that make Duolingo so popular—only with a lot more cute monkeys.

Great but it’s too American

If you want your child to learn how to read quickly then download this. If your American than that’s all you need to hear.

However if you’re from Britain some of the letter pronunciations are just to native to America, for example the letter y they say you should pronounce it like ‘eeeeeey’ instead of ‘yuuuuuh’ like we do it. My request is that you should make an option for the speaker to pronounce the words in a British way or any other country that speaks English.

Thanks for reading this.

A bit disappointed

I’m mostly disappointed with myself for downloading it in the daytime which didn’t give me enough time to try it first before my little one discovered it on the iPad.

The app isn’t bad but why on earth would you use both the letter names and the letter sounds in the same task?
It’s so confusing for the little ones just starting on their learning journey.

Although Maria Montessori observed 100 years ago that by teaching the phonetic sounds makes it easier for children to learn how to read and spell. Nowadays more and more studies show the same thing.

So why don’t you just take out the letter names and only leave the phonetic sounds in the first few levels and introduce the letter names later on at a higher level?
It would make things so much easier for little ones and set them up for success rather than them having to remember both at the same time. Just learning the alphabet song is enough for them to learn the letter names anyway so there’s no need to put so much emphasis on that.

It seems quite a few people have expressed the same concerns but you’re yet to make any changes.
