Earth Hero: Climate Change 9+

This gives an easy way to think about your carbon footprint and how to reduce it. It gives you a carbon calculator, and a load of actions you can take to reduce your emissions. They’re grouped by both impact and how easy they are so you can get started straight away with easy things and prioritise. It also has links to some great educational tools.

It has a couple of limitations which is to be expected- for one, a lot of the advice seems to be US centric so things like how you invest or access to energy source obviously vary depending where you live. It also just measures your footprint on general ‘stuff’ by how much you spend which is a bit misleading (especially as most sustainable options are more expensive) but honestly unless you input every purchase you make it’s going to be an estimate at best so best take it with a pinch of salt.

Overall though, fantastic app, really a great place to start. It’s completely free as well!

Thanks for pointing out the US centric actions. The Earth Hero team is all volunteer and includes people around the world, with many people in the UK as well. We will improve on those cases you pointed out.

Regarding 'stuff', if something is truly sustainable than it should not be added into 'stuff' spending. The modeling for that overall could be more dynamic and it is something we plan to improve in the future.

Also, we would add that most sustainable options are actually less expensive. That is because they tend to be re-usable or avoiding an unneeded purchase. There are many people that will gladly sell you a more expensive 'green' solution to make more money. They also tend to be the products that spend money on advertising, so take up more mind space. There are certainly exceptions to that, but it's something to be aware of.

This is one of the better climate change and carbon reduction apps I’ve seen! I love that you can track your footprint and that it updated based on things you do whilst using the app, making it a lot more thorough than other apps/calculators! Loads of ideas - many of which I hadn’t heard of.
My only critique is that there seems to be a strange glitch where I could only login using an email address I rarely use - all other login methods didn’t work (including apple, email, Facebook and the other option)! It still wouldn’t let me even when I tried to sign in on my partners phone. Weird!

Edit - upon using this app and other climate apps for a while, I came up with a couple more suggestions. One being to include questions about pets - which can significantly impact one’s carbon footprint and which I have seen articles for online with carbon footprints for them. The other was to include tailoring for the size of your house, use of astroturf/patio instead of a lawn/eco garden, use of pond/pools at home. This seems to be standard in most other apps/calculators but isn’t included in this one so it would be really interesting to see how that changes things.

Good idea to add actions related to pets and customising for the options mentioned. We will add that to the development list!

While not perfect, this app gives an great estimate of your carbon footprint.

By asking questions about your lifestyle (vehicle use, diet, etc.) it creates a graph that shows where the most carbon is being generated in your life. This graph is a brilliant springboard into learning new and effective “actions” to personally combat climate change and reduce your carbon footprint. The actions can range from small things, such as keeping handkerchiefs instead of tissues or turning the taps off when brushing your teeth, to bigger things, such as buying an electric car or joining a activism group.

I hope this app gets the attention it deserves, as it has the potential to teach everyone something life changing. The earth hero team has (and is still continuing to do) a stellar job.
