Ella Verbs: Learn Spanish 4+

I’ve been using the paid version of this tool for just over a year. I think it is well worth the money and has without a doubt helped my ability to use different tenses with more confidence.

During that time there have been a number of updates which has improved the quality and usability of the app. I suspect I’m not using all the options still! The app takes you from the most basic verb tenses to the most complex one via a series of milestones.

Each milestone starts with a lesson and is followed by exercises which you can complete as many times as you wish and once you feel confident you can level up which means you answer 30 questions and need to get 28 right to progress to the next stage. You can override this if you wish.

There is also the progress page which gives you an indication of your level of Spanish, on this page you will get smart quizzes. Keep doing these and you can choose either typing of multiple choice so you don’t forget your previous lessons. By completing the smart quizzes and revisiting the previous verb tenses that you have levelled up from will keep your ‘grade’ up. The main things I’d like to see more of now is reflexive verbs in the different tenses.

I have lived in Spain for 15 years and my Spanish is still pretty basic. I can get by, but I can’t chat in Spanish and official phone calls strike the fear of god into me! Lots of vocabulary, but all in a jumble and the verbs - the backbone of the language - have always caused me pain! My kids ( who are fluent ) find it hilarious. I’ve taken group classes, private classes, used CD’s (remember them?!) and countless apps. I downloaded the free version of this App yesterday and I have been totally engrossed. At last, I am seeing the patterns in the way the verbs work and it is all starting to slot into place. I know practice is key and I’m determined to keep going, and this App is one of the best I have come across, so it makes it more appealing to keep coming back to it. No doubt I will be upgrading to the paid version very soon, but there are certainly lots of very useful ‘drills’ in the free version. Very impressed so far! Thank You!

I have been studying Spanish for 4 years, although more seriously for about a year. I hate learning verb conjugations, and it is not easy to do from a book, just so boring. I came across this app and find it great for me. I spend 15 minutes a day reviewing, learning and testing my skills. It’s great for that and has helped me improve a great deal, and in a much more enjoyable way. One improvement that would help me: the app only lets you move onto other tenses once you have mastered the level you are at. This I find a little frustrating because I have some level of knowledge of all the tenses, just not enough. I think it would be better if you could refer to, and practice, all tenses as you need them, although I accept that for someone just setting out they need to walk before they can run. Otherwise I love the app.

It's true that for beginners we like to guide them through tenses from "easiest to hardest" but I understand this isn't for everyone. If you'd like to bypass this setting, you can do so within Settings > Change Level! Then you'll be able to pop in and out of whatever tense you prefer :) Happy learning! All the best, Jane & Brian
