Lingopie: Language Learning 12+

Great learning app just needs a few tweaks

I’m really enjoying Lingopie and feel like just the few weeks of using it has made my Spanish way better!
I’ve been intermediate for a while but struggle to understand when people speak fast or use complex language. . . The only reason it’s not a 5* is I’ve found sometimes the app is a bit glitchy, I’ll be watching something and use the repeat feature to listen to the sentence again or feature to look up the meaning of a word and it will just get stuck on repeat and the only way to get it off is to exit the app

Meraviglioso

I stumbled upon Linguapie by accident. After learning Italian via online Skype lessons for a couple of years, and watching subtitled movies on Netflix, it is a real game changer for me. I can watch Italian tv shows at slow speed, fully subtitled in Italian and English, stopping and starting the programme whenever I like, reading and re-reading the subtitles while listening to the delivery, and winding back whenever needs be. The system notes any word or phrase I highlight for me to revise whenever and as often as I like. It’s the best subscription I could wish for and has made me enthusiastic about achieving my learning goals a lot sooner than otherwise. I’m 68 so learning a new language ought to be much harder for me than for the average student but Linguapie is evening the odds. Learning is now never a chore but something I look forward to with enthusiasm. And, following the series with the young couple visiting interesting places throughout Italy, I am also being informed about places of potential interest I may wish to visit. The annual subscription us also a bargain - the price of four lessons with my Skype tutor. I am impressed.

Great idea, not a great app

Thankfully this has a free trial. Because there are several problems. First, you can’t watch the Netflix shows through the iPad app. This really isn’t clear until you signup and download the app. They can only be watched via a desktop Chrome based browser, not even Safari on the iPad. So in the app, you’re limited to the very small selection of included shows, most of which are using South American dialects for Spanish. Second, the audio sounds like robots are speaking, it’s very tinny, making it hard to understand. It also has a small but noticeable delay sometimes when characters start speaking, often missing the first syllable of the first word. Third, the search function and filters are really poor and need work. It really is a great idea, but until these problems are resolved I won’t be paying for it. In its current form, it’s almost unwatchable.
