Superb remake

Square did an amazing job with this, taking a classic game and giving it new life with a stunning rearranged score, hugely improved graphics, and numerous quality of life improvements. The game is a sheer pleasure, and so good that I went directly to buy the other titles in this series just to savor the new music and graphics.

Final Fantasy II is a little different from other games in the series, doing away with experience points and instead raising your party’s stats through direct engagement in battle - for example, the more a character casts magic, the stronger their magic becomes; the more one attacks physically, the stronger physical attack, etc. It takes a little getting used to, but the changed dynamic is fun, and the game features incredible music and classic gameplay. The older Final Fantasy titles aren’t overly sophisticated; they’re just hugely enjoyable games with lots of atmosphere that should be at the top of the list of anyone who likes classic Japanese role playing games.

It’s okay, but falls short of Wonderswan and Game Boy Advance version

It’s great to see a new version of Final Fantasy II released for modern times, but this isn’t the definitive version.

For a start, the game fails to hit 60fps all the time on an A12 device, which is quite the astonishing feat when the Game Boy Advance and Wonderswan managed it 20 years ago on much less powerful hardware.

I mention GBA and WS because much of this version’s graphics have been lifted from FFII Wonderswan, and FFI&II: Dawn of Souls on Game Boy Advance: namely the world and battle background tiles, and enemy sprites. Character sprites seem to be all new.

The rearranged music is a nice effort but doesn’t fit in with the visuals. That’s really the theme with this version of the game, it’s inconsistent. Menus clash with the aesthetic of the game itself, the music is much higher fidelity than the graphics, and despite the simplicity of the visuals the game still struggles to hit a smooth framerate on a device 1000x more powerful than a Game Boy Advance.

This is an okay, passable version of Final Fantasy II, but if you’ve got a GBA or DS knocking about you’re better served by getting a preowned copy of Final Fantasy I & II: Dawn of Souls.

No sound

For a remaster said to have reworked sound I was expecting the soundtrack and effects to be made better, not removed entirely. The game has sound settings that make me assume the designers intended to have audio, but the game itself lacks sound of any kind, very disappointed as a game for £10 should have audio
