HOW IT WORKS
Most aircraft today are equipped with ADS-B transponders that transmit positional data. Flightradar24 has a rapidly growing network of 50,000 ground stations around the world to receive this data that then shows up as aircraft moving on a map in the app. In an expanding number of regions, with the help of multilateration (MLAT), we’re able to calculate the positions of aircraft that don’t have ADS-B transponders.

I’ve had this app for a few years and use it regularly. It’s fun and useful whether wanting to know where that plane above me has come from/going to or meeting someone and knowing whether the flight is on time. I have tried to get used to the updated version, but it definitely isn’t as user friendly as the previous version. I used to be able to key in a route and easily find the flight I wanted to track. The drop down choices are confusing showing too many previous days’ flights plus there’s now a small “Live” next to each active flight - the flashing plane icon was easier to spot. The left hand panel is far too “busy” making it not so easy to read. I understand advertising is necessary, but it now displays in amongst the info I want to read making it cluttered and confusing. The panel also takes up one third of the screen making the tracking more restricted. I still love this app, bit I hope the developers take on board some of my comments as it is definitely not as enjoyable or easy to use now. This is a later addition to my earlier review. I have been trying to track a flight from LHR to SIN not knowing the flight number. It’s not easy now on this app. I used to be able to identify a flight by the departure time as well as flight number, but now I can’t. So I have to trawl through each flight number listed - and they aren’t all listed! There are some excellent new features, but it definitely is not as easy to find specific flights any more.
Strange.

Just got this app and I was well impressed with it until that is,it showed a helicopter near Wigan some 18 miles away and as I tracked it towards my position,it vanished? The helicopter actually showed up not half a mile from my bedroom window but the AR didn't show it and it's vanished off screen?? It certainly hasn't crashed because I know where it's landed!....not good I'm afraid.( Update)...I've just had a response to my review and it seems there are many variables to tracking and showing aircraft. I guess I'm used to using a similar type of app for ships which is very accurate. So although the reasons for the missing aircraft are out of the apps control it only goes up 1 star as in the end there are still aircraft flying over my house that just don't appear on the app. Not sure if this is any help but it appears that the larger the aircraft, the more likely it is to show up? A few single prop and helicopters have definitely flown over and " off the radar" as it seems. Thanks for the teams reply in explaining things too! Summary then... Seems good for general information but does not have 100% accuracy. Maybe the other similar apps are of a same ability too so happy plain hunting!UPDATE..Amazingly since paying the gold subscription everything works as it should! Shame it's so pricey though,

Sorry for the confusion! Please note that we use different technologies in order to display or "see" aircraft on the map, like ADS-B, MLAT and others. A lot of factors come into play when it comes to detect every aircraft, including the emitter on board, our coverage and receivers in the area, the altitude, and many more. For questions regarding why sometimes a specific plane doesn't show on the app, or how we work, please don't hesitate to email support@fr24.com
App to keep forever

The flight radar app has ads but they are only like 10-5 seconds long!!!! That really helps the app because there is a lot of apps that has LONG ads and people like the games but they delete it because the ads are so long!!!! But I've had an app and I ADORED it but the ads where like 2-3m long so I deleted it. Also it has so many people use the app because its FREE!!! I KNOW my mind was blown away when I first got it. Anyone one can use it!!! Because there is a search bar at the top Right corner you type your country or state in and it immediately gives you the place your looking for!! 100% get this app if your interested in planes And if you travel a lot because if you get on your plane and wondered what time you'll arrive at all you have to do if search the place your in and press the plane BAM your question is answered!!!! Thanks for reading this far!! Zoe.
Still cannot understand why wildcards are not allowed. SLY MARKETING OPTIONS.

Why on earth is there not an option to have a wildcard in the top search field ?. It would make life a lot easier. I know I can delve into filters and do it, but that’s a faff. Why can’t I just search for *61YV instead of having to know the airline ?!… I keep on getting “agree to partner privacy” settings. I disagreed to ALL. BUT THEN IT KEEPS ASKING ME TO AGREE. NO ! ITS SLY ! The new filtering (being able to use an asterisk) helps a LOT. Great news. But please please can you implement asterisk searching (wild card) in the search bar on the front page too ???..Why can’t I create an alert to alert me when any planes are coming into my local airport instead of having to use up 23 of my 25 available custom alerts ? I’m having to create alerts on “B7” “A3” etc etc with an arrival airport of “NCL”. I’ve used up 23 of my 25 available custom alerts having to do it this way. Why on earth can’t there just be an alert on whenever a plane takes off destined for a certain airport ?. I’ve been asking this for literally 6 years. It would make things a LOT easier. I can’t believe it’s still not an option when I’m paying £4 a month. And after every update there’s never ever any tangible new features. These features wouldn’t be hard to implement. I’ve been asking for YEARS. Also- BEWARE OF SLY MARKETING OPTIONS. Every so often it will ask me to click yes to marketing options in the app and it will slyly tick them all as “yes”, I then have to go in and click on “do not allow”. Once I say “do not allow. it should stay that way and never be changed, very sly and I suggest all users to opt out of ALL marketing options.
