Waste of time - deliberately deceiving
After looking for a bike for hire in my area I came across Freebike and this app. It showed 6 bikes available for hire near me in preview mode. To unlock, of course, you have to register and spend a minimum of £1. So we did that and after login those bikes magically showed up as unavailable. We checked out the location and the bikes were there. They stood still for 3 days until we rang the help number and were told those bikes were in use by the council and not available to the public. When questioned about them showing on the app, we were told the council workers use the same up. All perfectly understandable. What is not acceptable though, is showing those bikes as available in preview mode to entice registration and payment. This is deliberately misleading and a representation of lack of ethical standards by this company. Avoid.
I gave up and walked
Being stranded in london with no trains running due to a power outage, and needing to get across the place to a last minute hotel, I saw a neon Freebike and thought perfect! That’s just what I need, alas, after ten minutes of standing in the rain, installing the app and then trying repeatedly to make a payment (never seen anyone make Apple Pay so difficult to use- i think if apple saw your implementation they would not even let you use it) being told repeatedly apparently that my country which was set to the preset option of gb, given that I was in London, was not valid, eventually I gave up and just walked, there are other bikes you can just put a quid on and you can get jump bikes via the Uber app apparently, do that instead, this is a total waste of time
A slow tiring inconvenience
TLDR I can happily cycle a casual computer bike 8 miles without issue, after about 2 on one of these with the electric assistance I’m just as tired...
These bikes are heavy and I mean really heavy, they barely move until the electric motor kicks in. They also have no fearing which would be fine but these are in such an easy gear that when they do get moving they move so slowly there’s no point having the motor assistance at all...
The ride comfort is atrocious too, and standing on the pedals to avoid bumps doesn’t feel particularly sturdy and there seems to be a fair amount of resistance when freewheeling.
Honestly it seems like whoever designed these bikes never rode them. I’ve ridden a couple of other bikes from similar services and these are by far the worst I’ve tried.
I’d also love to know why Euston station is a red zone, seems like high traffic stations would be one of the places you’d want to encourage people leaving bikes.
