The outstanding hybrid synth for iPad, iPhone and iPod touch!

Grain Science is a beautiful synthesiser for iOS. Designed for musicians, soundscape artists and SFX engineers who want to go beyond our Sylo Synthesiser, Grain Science is built on similar principles of granular synthesis, but is vastly more powerful. Unlike many “experimental” granular apps, Grain Science mixes it up with traditional synthesis techniques to bring you an exciting hybrid synthesiser.
Use the built-in waveforms, or record or import your own — then use the sophisticated grain engine to create something completely new from them! Grain Science is easy to get to grips with, but offers lots of depth to explore: instead of offering one or two LFOs, almost any parameter in the system can be programmed to vary over time in complex ways.
Using careful optimisation techniques we provide two grain units per voice, which you can combine for morphing or complex modulated sounds, then send through a configurable FX chain. Pick any 4 from the collection of FX units (including various types of distortion, high- and low-pass filters, phaser, flanger, chorus, resonance and echo), and connect them up in any order. Other audio tweaks include soft loop, reverb, glide and supercharger controls, and the ability to affect granular synthesis in realtime (live grainbending).
Also featured are an arpeggiator with both chord and step-sequence modes; Core MIDI support, including Virtual MIDI, background audio, and “tap & twist” learning for setting up controls; and a customisable performance screen with a collection of XY Pads and wheels.
Rounding it off, Grain Science plays nicely with others: Dropbox, Twitter and email integration are all included, for sharing or exporting your waveforms, recordings of your performances, and instrument (patch) designs. And now featuring Audiobus support to stream your performance live to other compatible apps!

Excellent - well worth the money
Easy to pick up and play with, with some very usable instruments built in, but fantastic depth behind the surface to keep you occupied for months, this app is capable of creating some incredible sounds. There's tonnes of potential for creating fantastic sounds here, and loads of nice touches (dropbox intergration, the x/y pads, virtual midi), plus it looks great with a brilliantly functional UI that ensures you aren't fighting against the controls.
I was on the fence with this one for a while unsure if it would be worth the asking price after having bought some poor ios synths in the past (along with, of course, plenty of superb ones) but it's worth every penny and more.
Bad points - only one really, in the few days I've had it I've had a couple of odd crashes. Although that's possibly not entirely Grain Science's fault as I've always had other music apps runing too. Grab it, it's a bargain.
Great for experimentation
Really love this app, it sounds really good on a par with sunrizer. The interface is really well thought out and feels like it was designed for a computer touch device rather than trying to emulate older hardware.
The arpegiator is one of my favourite parts so easy to use and get results quickly.
Only criticism is that although the presets are nice, some other apps do have a a bigger range of professionally sculpted sounds. But for fooling around this is becoming my favourite music app.
Just get it
I think this app is another example of why the iPad is amazing for making music.
This is a sound fx creation machine. It is also an amazing musical instrument, I am really amazed at what I can get hold of for not much money.
You can really get all sorts of sounds out of it because you can put anything into it. The bit i love at the moment is to record a riff or sound then reimport it as a sample for another iteration of treatment/mangling.
It is by no means perfect, and there have been some crashes and glitches, but i don't mind. I do have a wish list of fixes and improvements, but on the whole truly excellent and therefore definitely 5 stars and I am sure the bugs will be ironed out.
Up to six family members will be able to use this app with Family Sharing enabled.
