I really like this app for so many reasons but one thing that really annoys me is that when new words are introduced it is often in the context of a whole sentence and while the new word(s) to be learned are translated the rest of the sentence isn’t, even though sometimes the rest of the sentence contains other unfamiliar words. This seems to me to be somewhat pointless, because not only would it make the new word(a) easier to learn in proper context but also I might happen to learn a couple of extra new words along the way if I only knew what they meant..! I end up typing them individually into a translator app sometimes just so that I can understand the phrase each time I see it but it would be so much simpler if I was shown the translation of every word in the new sentence, and not just the word or two that I’m ‘supposed’ to be learning. Other than that I would have given 5* because this app is the best language app I’ve come across so far.

Buggy and weirdly structured

I couldn’t even complete a single lesson; not for lack of trying, but because I was constantly blocked by server errors. It took several attempts just to create an account, only to run into even more errors when I tried to start a lesson. To top it off, I encountered even more errors when trying to delete my account.Technical issues aside, the way the lesson is structured makes little sense. The app introduces a word like “дом” (“house”) by displaying it on its own, and then immediately asks you to identify it inside a full sentence. But the sentence contains multiple unfamiliar words, so you're left trying to guess which individual word matches the meaning. It creates confusion because you're looking for one standalone word, but instead you're forced to parse a sentence full of new vocabulary that hasn’t been explained. An example would be when you’re asked to find “house” and the sentences shown translate to “this is a house”; it feels almost as if the responses are all in one jumble and the app just picks out any sentence that contained that word.I deleted duolingo years ago when they went all in on AI as I knew quality would diminish; this app feels like they asked an AI to create duolingo but from modern day, not the good version

I’ve used a few language apps, it’s good to diversify apps to advance quicker in your target language. I use Speakly for picking up new vocabulary. The app is really easy to use, and by showing you new words *in context* it really helps you improve your vocabulary as well as when you should use your vocabulary. Plus I think the Live Situations and Listening Exercises help make Speakly something to be used by people who really are serious about acquiring a new language.That being said, the bugs man... I say bugs, really it’s just one. The app will get stuck several times during a session and I’ll typically have to close and restart the app 5-10 times just to learn my new daily words.It’s been like this for a while, and I’m not the only review to have mentioned it, so Speakly have been aware of it for over a month. I know nothing about coding and appreciate that there are people working hard to sort this out. But it’s been going on for a while and it really hurts the user experience, particularly when this app has so many good things going for it.

Much better than Duolingo BUT…

Good course content and a good variety of features but once again missing features which could be useful, and making it hard to find information about grammar rules - you can’t learn a language without some grammar I don’t care what anyone says. It also has too many bugs and design issues - not clear exactly at what hour your streak will expire, ignoring your instructions to only prompt the you for Written responses instead of voice recordings. Maybe pronunciation of the language I’m learning is that good (it is) but I don’t fully trust its pronunciation evaluation system (the logic behind it is probably just speech to text and then evaluated which is fair enough). There are also some issues with listening exercises being incorrectly transcribed.
