I’ve been a member learning Japanese on the app for over 18 months and it’s fantastic. It covers grammar, vocabulary, kanji drills and reviews all in one app. Many apps I’ve tried before become glitchy, tiresome or just plain incorrect after the A1 stage. LingoDeer stays consistent and top quality and can definitely bring you up through the beginner levels of the language. Will you be fluent after completing all the levels of Japanese? No, but the app never makes that claim. Instead it gives you a really good understanding of grammar and sentence structure along with a variety of sentences that you can actually use (instead of the turtle eats the elephant). I also love the learning pages at the start of each new lesson, they just act as an optional extra bit of explanation for anyone struggling. The exercises are short and memorable and always end with a speaking/listening comprehension to drill them in. All the words and vocab are then added to the fantastic yet simple review section for you to practice afterword. This is section is completely customisable too, allowing you to choose your weakest words or target specific sections. The settings also enhance to learning experience, allowing you to alter things like the speed of dialogue or whether you want to read in romanji/kanji/hiragana etc. I can’t complement it enough, by far the best app for me!

Amazing!

I’ve only been using it for a short time, but it’s been really beneficial. I came from learning Japanese on Duolingo because I aim to go there in a few years time (to Japan, not Duolingo!), but I found it incredibly challenging. Unlike Duo (which is still a great way to learn languages casually, and is lots of fun due to the social aspect as well as the quick-fire lessons), Lingo tells you WHY certain symbols are placed where they are in sentences. While Duo’s swift lessons are enjoyable, they don’t help develop your understand of the language - rather, they focus more on just KNOWING words and letters from it. That isn’t a problem for languages such as Spanish, but for more challenging and complex ones like Japanese, it isn’t enough. Which is why I’d recommended LingoDeer! I feel like I’ve learned so much from just ten minutes using the app - and it’s completely free if you don’t choose to pay for the premium option (which is still good value). It’s also a good option for non-asian languages too. All in all, it’s a very well-rounded experience, not to be overshadowed by its green-feathered lookalike. Thank you for making a great learning tool!
Coffee Talks are fantastic, speech recognition needs some work
Acorn744
I don’t know if it’s the apps fault or if it’s Apple own speech recognition that’s doing it, I’m not a dev, but I fail on the pronunciation of “c’est” every time because it is actually expecting me to say “sest” instead of silencing the s and t like you should, which took me about 5 lessons to figure out. That said this app actually really shines in it’s Coffee Talk segments where I feel like I’m actually listening to a classroom setting, which alone makes it worth what I’m paying, as someone who wants to learn seriously. There should be a transcription though, I’m a great listener but some of the words mentioned haven’t even been included in the lessons yet so Im not entirely in tune to the vocabulary or their spellings.I chose this one over the likes of Duolingo because of its exclusion of AI generated readings and will stick to it for as long as they keep that far away from this. I’ve seen mention of AI in the future and I’m begging you, in lieu of changing your mind completely, to at least be minimal about it.
The best

As someone who has been learning Korean for the past 5 months from different apps like Duolingo and Memrise, I am very surprised to say that this app definitely tops both. When using Duolingo and Memrise, I was never fully satisfied. I felt like I was being thrown into the deep end without any explanation as to why sentences were structured a specific way etc; and I felt rather stuck at the same point of learning.I only started using LingoDeer today, but I can tell that I will be using it everyday from now on.I love how there are tips in every lesson, explaining the reason as to why certain words and sentences are structured a certain way, and giving useful information about grammar and how it is used differently in specific varied situations. It has given me far more confidence in speech, and reading and writing of Korean. Therefore, I recommend this app to any beginners who wish to learn Korean, and I send a big thank you to the developer who has finally fulfilled a necessary gap in the language learning market. The yearly payment I made was sure worth it.
