My Digital Filing Cabinet

For some time I have used Onenote from Microsoft has a repository for all of my Digital files, PDFs, screenshots... Essentially anything that I thought might be useful for reference in the future. Overtime I have felt the need for something a little more robust. Keep it provides this. It is well presented, easy to use, available to me throughout my use of my mac or iPad, and stores things in a way that is easy to access and transferable. As a result I have migrated away from Onenote where my items were converted or only viewable in other apps. The subscription model is perfectly fine by me. If I want updates I should expect to pay, and great apps don’t come about without time and work. Recently I have taken to digitally storing all my paper documents as scans. With Keep It this is so easy - I scan using the iPhone, share to keep It, tag if needed, and have it in a searchable repository. Can’t ask for more.
Becoming impressive

Initially, as an enthusiastic user of Together, I was – I admit it – disappointed by Keep It. It was unstable and not very beautiful; in short, I much preferred Together. But the developer keeps working away at Keep It, and it’s gradually turning into a very nice app with some unique features. Worthy of particular mention are the many different ways you can organise documents (using folders, bundles – more flexible than folders – and tags); the great “Compact” mode, which reduces the app’s window to a single, narrow column that can hover above any other windows/apps you’ve got open, so makes a perfect platform for taking notes on something you’re doing on the web, in a PDF etc. There aren’t many notekeeping apps that offer this feature, and it’s a valuable one.Other useful features: a nice, flexible search function that allows you to narrow searches down to name, content, comment or source (the latter for imported documents); excellent handling of imported web pages; the ability to create and save your own styles. Things that (in my view) are still missing are support for tables and horizontal lines in the notes editor, but I suspect they’ll be added at some point.Gradually, Keep It has become one of my preferred note-taking apps; I’ve stuck with it because of my previous respect for Together, and now I’m glad I did.
Developer Response
Hi, you can add tables to notes and rich text documents by choosing Format > Text > Table from the menu. Thanks for the review!
Keep It is a Keeper

Excellent and the first time I'm happy outside of Apple Notes. Keep it is like Apple Notes to use, but on steroids.. Extensive Formatting. Insert just about anything. Make a list of selected notes (As a Table of Contents via Services and Add to Keep It, arriving in Unfiled, just what I wanted. Folder/Subfolder Structure. Search extensive within Folder, Parent Folder or All Notes (Perfect for my Film Datbase use)The note taking is far more structured and with custom Formatting compared to evernote. I find it sits nicely between Apple Notes and Devon in complexity, but half the price to buy as a one off. It's also roughly only the price as a one off purchase compared to only one year of evernote, but Keep It is yours forever.I was initially thrown by the fact that, as in Apple Notes and others, hitting the Space Bar for Quick View over an Attachment, overtypes it with a space and effectively deletes that part of the note. You have to make sure you Right Click and select Quick View. The Dev was very quick to respond to my query and said that it would likely to be looked at, as a revision (Thanks Dev).I'll Keep It.
An Evernote replacement

At long last I’ve found an app to replace Evenote.Keep It looks and behaves like a Mac app, which helps considerably, and integrates with macOS nicely. The interface is clean and tidy, with lots of options, though I do wish some of the formatting tools were not stuck in the menu bar, and were instead in the main note window, assuming it doesn’t unduly clutter the UI.Importing from Evernote works well, if you ensure to do it a notebook at a time, or smaller chunks if you have lots of notes in a single notebook. During importing you can convert to a native Keep It note, which works pretty well considering what it’s having to do. A big plus is that your files are all in an accessible format that you can grab in the future if need be.Organisation is a must for this kind of app, and I’m pleased to see that Keep It has you covered - folders, bundles, tags, labels, favourites, and saved searches, which are sort of like smart folders. Probably best to rethink ones organisational structure in Keep It if coming from Evernote.Taking a bit of a leap of faith relying on iCloud, which has not been without a glitch, but so far only a minor issue that was resolved. Still yet to try out the iCloud sharing feature, but if it works like advertised it’s another nail in Evernote.Still needs to improve in a few areas but it’s still early days for the app. But none of these are show stoppers, and what it lacks I’m sure will come in due course based on the developers steady progress. And nothing to stop one from using it on a daily basis nowOverall, Keep It is a very nice app that now happily lives in my Dock.
- Fixed an issue where a summary could be shown in the list after an encrypted note or text file was viewed and edited.
- Improved the accuracy of progress shown when initially fetching shared items and folders from iCloud.
- Fixed an intermittent crash that could occur when entering Compact Mode.
- Fixed an issue finding items by their source URL.
- Fixed an issue getting text content for notes and rich text documents with attachments in the Shortcuts app.
- Improved the appearance of various menus on macOS 26.
